It's a little surprising to me that Shontrelle Johnson wasn't named a captain. Hard to think of a current Cyclone who's battled through more injury related adversity.

I'm shocked this one turned into a crapstorm.
Someone had their own opinion, seemed to be decent about it. Somehow we got this.

We really need football season right now.

I guess I didn't think the whole thing came across as especially 'decent'. But, of course, I am stupid and think that decisions on something that I am not at all an expert at (i.e. team captains) are not worth bashing.

We don't have a special teams captain every year. In 2011 the captains were (according to an old post from CW, can't find it elsewhere):

#6 Darius Darks
#72 Kelechi Osemele
#20 Jake Knott
#22 Ter'Ran Benton
#97 Stephen Ruempolhamer

And I can't find any further back than that. I'm pretty confident that we don't always have a special teams guy as a captain.

He's a junior, first of all and I think it will be rare to see juniors in a captains capacity. I think White was an exception because you didn't have a QB worthy of being a captain and by all accounts, he's one of, if not the hardest working guy on the team. We may see SR as a captain next year but I would say outside of a QB, it will be seniors who are named captain. That's how it should be. Your seniors should be leaders. I think it really speaks to the leadership of this years seniors that we have had a very low amount of off the field incidents as well. It seems like the examples set by Jake, AJ and company have set into these guys and now they are setting a good example. Knock on wood but I can't even think of an off the field incident in during this offseason.

This is exactly what I was getting at. It is a great honor to be voted captain by your peers, and it bothers me that people think Kirby and especially Bueker were only captains because they are special teams players. The last P/K that I see was in 1990

Hate to break it to you, but Shontrelle is a senior.

That's what I was thinking. He broke the KU defenders ankles in 2010, had the back or neck injury in 2011, and torn acl right before the bowl game last season.

Brun was unexpected but that's a great sign. Surprised to see Farniok left off.

In a rare prediction that came true, I posted about Brun having captain potential after last year's Iowa game. I was really impressed by the way he worked the entire sideline, getting everyone to give high fives during the 4th quarter to pump up the team on the sideline.

Also surprised not to see Farniok. However, there is always more to these decisions than meets the eye. It may have been as simple as being the fourth offensive player who came one vote short. We all know that Farniok is the "center" of our O-line (and therefore "center" of our offense).

In the video of Coleman getting his scholarship, it was nice to see Woody come walking over to Coleman to congratulate him while everyone else stayed seated. That is what captains do, naturally.

captains are a great honor, but it's overrated. It's a respect thing.

Footballintexas has an opinion and probably a valid one with Farniock and several folks get all uptight and respond that it's the teams captains, that's like saying the coaches choose the qb and no one should have an opinion....there would be no reason to have a message board if it weren't for opinions. Post on Texas guy, I like the perspective.

FootballinTexas and I typically have differing opinions but he always offers some kind of reasoning that I can at least follow and although I may not agree, I can usually respect his opinion. Great contributor to the board, post on Texas *20 gallon tip of the hat*
