Hearing the players talk about underachieving last year, I looked back, man you forget how we just gave games away last year. We were so much dominant over Iowa in every category except turnovers. They had 173 yards total. We just gave them the win.

Oklahoma, again, we beat them for 98% of the game. Give up one long run, and then the real killer was Purdy fumbling right to OU for a touchdown 9 seconds before halftime.

I'm thinking there is one really key thing we have to do this year for a more successful season. If only we can figure out that one thing.

I had to check and make sure this wasn't posted by Curly...

This is just loaded with gems. Here’s what stands out to me:

A. Just to get it out of the way…that Grant Treiber was the offensive MVP of the Spring is awesome to me. The kid was a relative unknown nationally, but his “other” visit was to Oregon—and we all know the kind of athletes they recruit. Kid looked like a gazelle on the field at 6’6” 280.

I’ve assumed that adding 40+ pounds slowed him down a little—or he’s been dinged up. Guess we’ll see.

B. Yes, CMC occasionally uses coach speak when talking about various units. One thing he doesn’t do is misspeak when he’s talking about players who stand out in various settings—from Spring ball to fall camp to the gems of recruiting classes.

So, when he says that Treiber and Porter (with Verdon next on defense) we’re the MVP’s of Spring drills, that means something.

Of course, being the MVP of summer/fall camp is a bit more relevant, because it’s so immediate to the season.

C. We’ve all been hearing whispers about how well Darien Porter is doing since switching to corner. Along with Grant, Breece, Jirehl and Isheem, he was one of the most talented members of his class—though that was mostly his speed and athleticism.

Speaking objectively, Darien compares favorably to Cincinnati’s corner, Sauce Gardner, referring strictly in terms of height, length and straight line speed.

Without knowing any of his other measurables, what he’s definitely lacking is experience at the position. He’s at the polar opposite end of the spectrum there. It sounds promising, but we’ll see how it turns out when the season starts.

D. TJ Tampa is another relatively raw bundle of ultra athletic promise, but he’s been working hard to improve his cornerback skills.

E. We all know that Tayvonn Kyle is good at coming up in run support. That alone makes for a solid fourth corner. With his speed and athleticism, if he improves his coverage skills even moderately, this is a viable two deep.

F. I had to stop and think about what CMC said about Malik Verdon. I didn’t want to bite on that in the wrong direction. “Maybe the most physically impressive in the defensive backfield”.

Okay, I think I’ve got it. Porter and Tampa are probably the most athletic—but both are a mite on the skinny side. Purchase is 5’11”. So, the contenders would probably be the 6’3 205 Mason Chambers (whom CMC also mentioned), 6’2” 205 Beau Freyler, 6’1” 210 Trevon Howard, 6’4” 210 Treyveon McGee—and the 6’4” 215 Verdon.

So I guess I can see where “most physically impressive” comes from.

These guys aren’t small.

G. Oh, and Anthony Johnson is built like a brick shirthouse now, too. And after him, Chambers is now the second longest tenured Cyclone DB. He can bring the lumber. CMC seems to suggest he’ll be doing more than that.

H. I think Freyler is going to surpass Greg Eisworth as the most lauded safety of the CMC era.and maybe more than that.

I don't know how the one thing isn't being better fundamentally.

Stats are what they are but you could tell Iowa was more sound fundamentally early and it showed as the game went on.
WV, BU and Tech were too when it mattered.

I'm excited to see newer players to see what they can make of it.

Cliche but learning to win comes with time, and Campbell is establishing a winning mindset.

Iowa's special teams have been great against us in the past few games with them. They also haven't turned it over since 2015!!! We have turned it over multiple times since then and it could be argued that the turnovers in the 2017, 2018, 2019, and certainly 2021 were the key difference in all of those loses. I firmly believe that is Purdy doesn't fumble early on at the Iowa 19 yard line in 2019, there is no way Iowa would have won that game.

Add in the dropped int and awful punt return along with the defense having bad angles.

All fundamental issues.

oh, and returning a kick off out of our own end zone and ending up with the ball at our own 5 yard line. Special teams have been horrific in this game.

Yep. That's game awareness stuff and comes back to the fundamentals/details.

They were solid last year the 2nd half of the season but otherwise they've been spotty at best for a program that's all about the 'margins'.

Got to admit, I was skeptical

Generally speaking ISU has been a bad football team in Sept in the Campbell era. UNI, Iowa, Louisiana, Akron have all been very poorly played games, and in the Campbell era ISU has only won the conference opener once.

There’s something in the preseason and early season approach that is causing this team to be very slow starters.

I think that is a feature not a bug, so to speak. Players, formations, plays. I think the staff is still figuring out their schemes based on how guys are playing coming into the season. So they haven't had enough time to practice the plays and thus the execution is poor. That's my guess anyway.

If that is right, they need to find a way to speed up that process...
