Recruiting a top end talent as a back up plans is not easy. TJ can't go all in on Welch knowing his scholarship is contingent upon AJ staying in the draft. Plus, Welch isn't dumb, he knows Iowa St's situation.

Tons of teams do that. Recruits wait all the time to see what other recruits are going to do.

Many places would go 14 imo.

Whether Welch would want to come, hard to say, but he's looking at TT. Given what we were already short on a year ago, and have since lost, I don't think normally a player like Welch would see the path to role harder here than TT. Even with AJ. We lack shooters, let alone elite shooters, that can defend and rebound. He's arguably exactly what we want next to Williams and AJG.

I think the real issue is the fact we long targeted and landed his teammate and fellow guard in Holmes. If Holmes is a 27% shooter from some other midmajor, it is a lot easier sell imo.

Yeah they're called blue bloods. Think about it from the recruits point of view. If you're Welch, and have an offer to commit to a very good team like Texas Tech today, why wait a few more weeks for the possibility of committing to Iowa St? What happens if he tells Texas Tech no, so they find someone else and are full, then AJ does come back, and Iowa St is full too?

The backup plan for AJ is likely to come after his Nba decision. If he does go, then maybe there's someone else in the portal that decides not to go pro, and needs a scholarship. Or someone decides to come back, and that pushes someone else into the portal. Transfers are not really done until school starts in August.

It all depends where a player wants to play. If they want to play at a place bad enough they'll wait.
