Wanted to throw this out there, does ISU have their starting QB on the current roster? Will ISU go transfer portal?

Would a new OC and/or new OL coach be enough of a difference maker to elevate Hunter to midpack of the Big 12 QBs?

Well…we do have an extremely highly rated QB coming in as a Freshman this year in JJ Kohl (assuming we can keep him).

However, without improvements on the o line and coaching, even Tom Brady would struggle in this offense and I’m not sure Hunter is to blame for a lot of our problems. Hunter has made mistakes, but he’s been hamstrung by an inept line and incompetent play calling.

Not exactly sure.
Dekkers deserves so much more credit. In conference play, our rushing offense is the WORST among Power 5 schools at 77 yards a game and 2.6 ypc.

Dekkers will be the starting QB in 2023/2024—I’m not sure why that would change.
Dekkers not being a running threat is also a reason our running game is struggling. Defense doesn’t have to take him serious that he will keep it and the few times he does, it shows why he’s probably told to just hand it off, he doesn’t have a good nose for running. He also is a turnover machine.

I don't think Dekkers is fully to blame for the turnovers. The coaching staff has put alot on his shoulders. He has been forced to pass alot. Partly because they are always playing from behind and partly because the run is completely ineffective. What else can you do? If you can't run you have to pass. Unfortunately when the defense knows we have to pass that makes it alot easier to force turnovers.

HD will start next year. He's still a 1st year starter, but If he continues to throw interceptions at the current rate in year 2, he might not remain the starter all season.

I do recognize he's had many catchable balls dropped. Of his INTs, how many have been tipped?

I really don’t think we can fairly evaluate Dekkers. Can’t run the ball, guys can’t get open and when they do they have key drops.

As the former QBs always say, QBs two best friends are a running game and a great TE. ISU is missing that now. Purdy was certainly a good QB, and he had some struggles at times with the best RB in the planet and two NFL TEs, one of whom was one of the best in the country.

He’s had some serious mistakes but flashed some great things. The offense is just an all around mess. There isn’t a QB on the roster now, or probably ever at ISU that could perform consistently well on this offense.

Dekkers is an OK runner if he commits to it. His problem is that when he is indecisive or doesn't commit to running that he's bad.

When looking at tipped balls you also have to see why they were tipped. The pass to stanley Saturday was tipped, but it was tipped because he threw a rocket when he should have taken a little off. Throwing it as hard as you can a little high 10 yards down field makes it nearly impossible to catch. That pick was on Dekkers, he threw basically an uncatchable ball.

And there is the problem, he is only decisive when he doesn’t have to decide. If he heads left and left is open he will look good, if one person is out there he will confuse himself and try to dance with them instead of hitting high gear and either turning up or bouncing out.

The problem goes so far beyond Dekkers.

Then you lose Hutchinson and Downing prior to next year. That is not a great situation. They’re basically starting from scratch at WR next year. And although they return 4 starting OL, none of them are any good.
