We know over the years that Campbell and staff don’t care about the depth chart. With that said, Ebel (without an or) over Sadowski is surprising, but a great sign that he completely overtook the position. Ben Ngoyi has been the hot name from coaches since spring ball. Him being listed as the third receiver tells me he’s going to be a big time player this season. The wide receiver position is absolutely loaded right now.
My honest assessment on the D last year was middle linebacker was our weakest area. Sadowski seemed to really struggle diagnosing plays, reading offenses instinctively, and running quickly.

I think it is a huge plus if Kooper Ebel is at Mike and has overtaken that position. He looks like the closest thing we have to an AJ Klein or Jake Knott. I like it. This is quality talent maturing in our pipeline.

He’s not. He’s at Will.

And I’m pretty sure he’s both taller and more athletic than both Knott and Klein.

Defensively-
  • Feel real good about the DL. 3 guys that could be all-conf level, plus some good depth, basically 5 quality starters.
  • Feel real good about the secondary. 3 stud safeties, and (imho) 3 real good corners plus the LSU transfer.
  • Worried about LB. Bacon was good last year. But a lot of younger guys, and the ones that played last year were shaky. If that young group steps up their level of play - watch TF out for this defense. If not, well, they're gonna get picked on and it will be hit or miss depending on the opponents weapons and OC. I will say, Heacock has been something of a linebacker whisperer, so let's be optimistic.
This might just be me, but I feel really confident in our LBs this year. I think we have great depth and they are going to surprise us. This is looking like another top-3 big 12 defense overall.

If you think CMC is puts little to no effort in any aspect of being the HC of ISU, then you don't know Matt Campbell. Stubborn? Maybe. Lazy? No.
If you think Matt Campbell views a depth chart published for the benefit of the media and fans as important to his program or his team, you haven’t been paying attention. All Matt’s attention is on his team, very little of it is on some depth chart published before game one.

Last year Aidan Bitter was listed as a potential starter at WR and Quaron Adams was Noel’s backup. The depth chart is fun to talk about, but Saturday will tell us much more.

I really really really hope you are right!

And its possible. Heacock has turned a few guys that looked underwhelming into real good LBs. My god, Jake Hummel is collecting an NFL paycheck- who had that projected when he showed up?

I'm not a big fan of how some have put on weight during their time; it seemed to slow them down on pursuit, etc.

But that's just my arm chair view as I'm sure there were reasons for it.

In our 3 man front, MLB quite often has A gap responsibility opposite the NG and fills aggressively. I think that was the reason for the weight as that guy ended playing almost as a stand up DL at times. Will be interesting to see how that philosophy changes with more 4 man fronts.

He doesn't do it for the media, he does it for the politics of his players.

Case in point, the "OR" in the QB spot.

Just a guess, but with only 3 DL, the LBs get used more as "heavies" and the safeties are more like light and speedy LBs?

Not to mention that Brendan Black wasn't listed on the depth chart at all last season. For OL especially, I'm not sure Campbell's depth chart has ever matched up with the five who ended up playing together the most.

Yeah I can see that as the deal.

Also possibly a point to be able to handle the physicality in general.

I will stay stuck on Mike Rose being the most 'multiple' as a freshman.

I am absolutely certain that Matt Campbell has a depth chart sitting on his desk. And it’s fluid, and he updates it frequently.

And this isn’t it.

I 100% believe that CMC has a depth chart and the players know what is on it. I just don't think it is necessarily the same as the depth chart given to the media.

I find it interesting that there are 12 positions listed on each side of the ball. I realize that who is on the field is going to be formation/situation dependent, but is this something that the staff has done with roster releases in past years?
