Seems like this fantasy free agency stuff, while fun, is true fantasy. We probably have enough money to keep like our best 3 guys, and then some left over for 2-3 transfers from mid majors.

Couple guys will take a deal to stay like Lipsey. Plus, we don’t go after the big free agents. We go after guys that serve a role. Teams like Kansas spent a fortune going after anyone that averages 16 points a game

Hope we do everything we can to retain the starters + Heise, because that is enough to make us a dangerous team again, and really dangerous if we pick up two good transfers or a couple of the freshmen make an impact
TJ and staff have a pretty darn good track record of bringing in at minimum two high level guys every single year in the portal. You hit another homerun with an all conference caliber player like a Brockington/Curtis Jones/Justin Jefferson you may be looking at one of (if not the best) rosters we have ever seen at Iowa State and yet another top 5 ranking to start the season.

Really important transfer season. If you can donate a little...do it! Yet again next season, depending on how the transfer season shakes out, this team will habe a very real shot at a Final 4 run.

Hope you are right but you can only rely on hometown discounts for so long.

indeed they do have a good track record, but things are different now. Guys like Osunniyi and Ward are not coming here if it is 2025 offseason instead of 2022, things have changed that much in that short of time. We lucked out on Jefferson, he was under the rador because of a knee injury. To get guys the caliber of the above 3, we are really going to have to pay big.

Maybe but Harding not a difference maker for a legit ncaa type team . Just look at his time on a bottom feeder team in pretty weak conference after the top 4 teams….. which dominated him .
The kid is a backup that can start in an emergency because of injuries, give him 10 minutes a game and get him out.

He's a good player but at 6'4 180 I have doubts on how he would hold up during a Big 12 season. Kelderman weighs more than Stirtz.
If I recall, 6'5" Haliburton was 165 pounds. Monte, 6'3", around 170-175. I may be a bit off on the weights, but not by much

Ummm. Virginia, Michigan, tcu all wanted Jefferson. Florida wanted Osun but we could sell a boatload of playing time as well as playing with his teammate Jaren. Ward I'd say was under the radar and really developed here.

No, he’s absolutely right. Things have changed, even from last offseason

Louisville is looking to spend $8 million to $10 million in the portal, for example. The market has increased more than our budget

That overcomes a lot of PT that we can offer, in a situation similar to Osun

Jefferson wasn’t getting offered as much had he been healthy, and even though Gen, would potentially be out of our price range if last year’s market were as high as this one

We’ll need guys willing to come for materially less, or find guys that few other, if any, high majors are willing to use NIL on

Brockington, C Jones, Gilbert, Jefferson werent on any top 25 transfer lists. These werent top of the market transfers. They all turned into all conference caliber players. TJ and staff have done an incredible job with player evaluation and development. Bill Self even touched on it. Our staff has done it year after year.

All I was saying, if they hit on another 1-2 of those this offseason, they are gonna be really REALLY good next season.

Agree. Most of the best transfers don’t break the bank.

Yep. Just need to find the character kids that want a good experience, want to win and be part of something bigger than themselves. It's not easy, but step one is having a staff with a crystal clear vision of who they are and who they want to be.

we’re poor! Poverty! Hear this all the time but seems like we always get guys. So maybe we aren’t as poor as everyone wants to be? We just happen to be the luckiest power conference school and we’re always getting these top guys for cheap for some reason or another? I don’t buy it.

They don't seem to be top guys when they choose Iowa State. Just go back and look at the top 100 transfer lists from last summer. TJ is getting 2nd, even 3rd tier guys that play his way.

We have had some connections, and have gotten some great players like CJ and JJ, but TJ has also played some players that were not the total package. That first year it felt we were always throwing bricks when what we needed was a basket.

There will always be more quality players than roster spots. Big schools will end up filling their rosters with 10 guys for 5 mil each but there will be plenty of guys just as good that don’t get the big money invites. Key is to identify and retain these.

Which is what our coach happens to be an expert at doing. I don’t remember who our competition for Curtis was but it wasn’t the big dogs.

There will always be inefficiencies in the market

But being limited to those is an uphill battle

If not for money, is there any doubt TJ would land a couple of the more sought after transfers to replace two high volume guys?

I think PG is a huge priority. And Moore decommiting is probably a sign of that. Tamin has yet to make it through a season healthy and no one is going to change the way he plays. We need to prepare like he’s going to be out multiple games next year. And if we get someone in the portal that is good enough to start over Heise at the 2 and move over to PG when Tamin sits, all the better. But at the very least we need a solid ball handler and defender.
