It's beyond over board to have them in pads before middle school IMO. They need to be working on fundamentals not racking up there residual head trauma results. There are also tackling drills that don't require a ton of head trauma during them. Many ways to lessen the effect of the repeated concussive blows which are present in football.

As far as during games, career athletes should be educated on the statistics. They can make their own informed decisions. All sports are dangerous. My physical therapist said that he felt soccer was actually worse for head traumas and knee injuries. Surprised me.

Football is not going to die

I think the writing is on the wall for it to die. It just depends on how far out you're talking. There's probably too much money involved and its too much of our society for it to happen in my lifetime. It's gonna take a long, long time. But we're just scratching the surface on this stuff. Eventually, there will be tours of these regional sites where people strapped on helmets and beat the hell out of each other for the amusement of millions.

Football gets a ton of attention for this, rightfully so but I think its interesting that for girls, soccer and basketball are where they are seeing the highest concussion rates. Girls are almost twice as likely to get a concussion as boys playing the same sport. This study is a bit old but I think the most eye popping number was a 15% annual increase in concussion rate. Is any sport safe?

http://www.medstarsportsmedicine.org/research/which-youth-sports-cause-the-most-concussions/#q={}

Once again, confusion about concussions vs constant sub-concussive hits. A concussion in girls basketball may be equal to a concussion in football, but the constant repetitive hits that also help cause CTE do not exist in girls basketball.

Die, no, but as I said earlier participation by kids is dropping like a rock. I loved FB in HS and 10 years ago would've been crushed if my son didn't want to play. Now I'm hoping he doesn't. It's crazy, he's in 3rd grade and someone wanted him to join a tackle league. CTE aside I think that is absolutely ridiculous.
As 8686 said, boxing might be a good comparison.
Participation by kids is more of a reflection on society's changes over the last few years. It has nothing to do with understanding or relating to the concussion/CTE medical facts. Parents are sad and kids are becoming wimps. What, my son failed his math test? I am setting up a meeting with the Principal and teacher to see why they can't teach. My daughter didn't make the A volleyball squad? She's quitting to get away from all of the political bs where coaches only choose their kids to play. Well if my kid isn't good enough to start in football, no reason for him to be out there with his teammates. Tackle football ball at 3rd grade? Oh my god, what a scary travesty.

Sorry for the rant, but our country needs an attitude check. Football caused CTE is about the lowest concern on the radar as it relates to the physical and mental health well-being of our nation.

I find it funny that you posted this right after you posted this:
Just to be clear, this is a crazy opinion on the facts.

Because there's not a single fact in your rant, just rampant speculation and opinion.

A friend who started for the cyclones used to call me a ***** in high school for not playing football. I asked him if his kids will play football and he said no.

There are attitude changes and it will affect the number of players available. Like most things, people with other options will not play and kids without options will take the risk.

Are you one of the parents screaming at their kids/the umps at little league? Because I'd say that's a much bigger societal concern than parents being "sad" and kids being "wimps"

It's very good to be aware of but somewhere along the line we started valuing safety over enjoying life (or any other thing).
I think how it was growing up for me is probably what it needs to be. 3rd-4th is touch football. Then 5th and 6th they go to "tackle". I think that the bigger issue with youth sports is specialization. People are to worried about making it to the next level that they forget to learn what sports teaches us which is hard work.

Football isn't going to die, but the quality of play and athletes are going to drop significantly over the next 20 years. There will probably be more safety rule changes as well like eliminating kickoffs.

There is so much money in the sport it will be difficult to get rid of it unless lawsuits finally make it unprofitable. I started playing in the 5th grade and my helmet had no facemask. I remember a couple times when a teammate got knocked out cold - 5th grade.

You can die driving to work, or taking a shower. Doesn't stop us from doing that. I am not a conservative person, but we really are a bunch of wimps now. I mean its despicable.

Not wanting to play or have your kids play football does not make you or your kids a wimp. If CTE is a concern, and I am pretty sure that the facts know now tell you it is that makes your decision to not possible be dead by the age of 50 because of a game actually pretty smart.

We've all seen multiple football players die early, suffer from mood swings, dementia, and all of the effects of CTE. We've all seen the research that's come out and little of it is good. CTE and football are relatively new bedfellows, but it's pretty clear there's a link. I'm just curious how you arrive at the conclusion that because some parents are being cautious, that it makes them wimps. Things like dementia and early death aren't small consequences. What kind of parent wouldn't be cautious about that? Why does caution make them despicable?

They don't have enough data to make long term assumptions at this point. It's just extrapolation. Now it may be true in the end, but there are so many people who played football in this country, if it were such a prevalent problem then we would see FAR more issues with people everywhere.

My high school football coach has CTE or something related and its very sad. He has degenerated mentally and barely remembers members of his own family. He sometimes wanders out in the middle of the night and doesn't come home for hours with no memory of what has occurred.

Now I tell you this because he was an old school hard knock kind of football coach, and even he was taking fairly drastic measures to make football safer during his practices. This was a top notch program btw, so this process was perfected over years of use.

His own career went through his college years. He played with little regard for his health. Now does he deserve his condition? Absolutely not, but if you're going to sit here and tell me that people didn't know repetitive head traumas or mini jars to the brain were going to cause problems then I would have to call you a fool. You sign a waiver to play football, its dangerous. Everyone knows this. What makes me angry is the giant out cry to try and make people not want to play football any longer.

Educate the players and parents. Limit the amount of contact in practices. There are many drills that can teach a player to tackle with correct form, that can be just as effective half speed as they are full speed. The knee jerk reactions are what anger me, and yes I'm sorry but our country is becoming the quit if its hard country. We're wimps. My parents were/are both teachers, I have to hear about it all the time.

TLDR:

If you choose to have your child not play football, great. But don't go around trying to talk everyone out of doing what they want and act like its some kind of brilliant epiphany that hitting your head 10,000 times causes long term brain problems.

End rant. Flame on.

now hold on here. Who in this thread has said others shouldn't let their kids play? I've only seen people saying they will be cautious on letting their own kids play. But I've seen plenty of posts - including yours - slamming said parents for being wimps, overprotective, and seeming to have a lot of anger over a decision that doesn't impact them at all.

Your rant fails hard when it comes up against the evidence that the NFL went out of its way to discredit the link to CTE for years. Their narrative was that football had no impact on brain health. The NFL was the gold standard for influencing lower leagues and in turn parents. We were all lied to. What do you expect the reaction to that would be?

To your other point, how exactly do you justify your call that people shouldn't go around telling people they shouldn't play football, when you attempt to influence folks yourself by saying that everyone who doesn't want their kids to play is a despicable wimp?
You seem to be talking out of both sides of your mouth.

The NFL, a monoply multi-billion dollar orgainzation lied to protect itself. Man that had to be the first time that happened.

I think people are wimps when they find an easy out and use it as a crutch for the rest of their lives. I accused no one directly in this thread. I speak only to the giant media out cry about all this. Every day I see some parent spewing on about not playing football. If you want to accuse me of generalizing ok, fine. I do it for practicality of conversation. I'm not writing a research report here. In fact my give a **** has just run out. I have no personal problems with you btw.
