Raise your hand if you wait all winter, spring and summer long for college football season.
Raise your hand if your house actually schedules events and family outings around Iowa State’s football schedule.
Raise your hand if you think college football is the greatest sport in the world?

My hand went up for all three. I try to watch at least a part of every bowl games (thank goodness for remote controls because I do a lot of channel flipping)

I would raise my hand for any if they were about college basketball rather than football

I've never understand the complaints about too many bowl games. If you think there are too many then don't watch all of them, problem solved.

I was thinking the same thing. My interest in the rest of the college football world fluctuates with ISU's success. Kind of a bandwagon CFB fan in that regards. I'm not a bandwagon Cyclone fan though. I suffer through every ISU game.

March Madness is another monster, though. I can't watch enough CBB.

"KenPom.com has Iowa State going 6-1 during that span with its only loss coming to Kansas in Lawrence on Jan. 29."

This isn't really correct. KenPom has us at 4.34 expected wins (and 2.66 expected losses) during these seven games.

If you imagine a team that is favored by one point in five straight games, you wouldn't expect it to win them all. And that's essentially what you're doing with that sentence.

There is just so much interesting stuff to follow on a national level with MBB if your team is even remotely relevant. More ranking fluctuations, bracketology, small leagues that produce contenders. And even if you have a team that looks like they'll be on the wrong side of the bubble, you can still hold out hope to make a run in the conference tournament (unless they are really really bad).

For ISU football, you know at the beginning of the season it doesn't pay to follow the national title race from anything but a neutral perspective. You don't bother caring about the rankings after you pick up that first loss. And, as this year demonstrated, it can be pretty easy to give up the hope of contending in the conference or getting to a bowl pretty early.

I watch some bowl games if I'm home and nothing else is on. I've gone out of my way to watch a lot of MBB that was tangentially related to ISU already this year.

The bowl pool i am in, makes every game very important - so i have watched almost every one with great interest. Before this pool, i could give two ***** about 80% of the games. Do wish that Jan 1 games were actually played on Jan 1, not the 2nd, 3rd, ect.

As for Johnny Football, he's really fun to watch in college. But how many of the Duke kids on defense will be playing on Sunday. Johnny football is like Marcus Fizer in college, unbelievable until he faces competition that is bigger and faster than he is.

I, too, enjoy bowl "week", but it just can't compare to March Madness, where every game is meaningful, not just enjoyable to watch. Are there ever really Cinderella teams in the bowls? Even with the new set-up next year, the possible participants are so few that upsets on the scale of a 15 knocking off a 2 are not remotely possible. Come March, there will be 2-weeks of conference tournaments where low seeds knock off conference leaders and make the dance. Then, 3-weeks of the national tournaments (MBB & WBB) with hundreds of games to watch, plus the Hawkeyes competing for their national championship in the NIT. How fun is that. Nothing else compares.:twitcy:

I have to think this is the best time in Iowa State Athletics since the Winter/Spring 2000-Winter 2001 time period. Between MBB, WBB and FB it was a pretty good time.

I should add: I went to the KU game and froze my *** off. I watched every game on TV even when it was clear we wouldn't have a winning season. I'm not a fairweather ISU FB fan, I just have little desire to spend extra time on football when my team isn't in the mix.

I live for NCAAFB but I do think there are too many bowl games. I remember the days of throwing oranges on the field after ISU won their early season games....

I like the idea of giving more teams/seniors a chance to go somewhere to play one last game, and even give some of them a more isolated showcasing for scouts, etc., so as a general college football fan, it doesn't bother me. It's also about the only way that a team from ISU is going to consistently play in a bowl.

My gripe with bowl games (which is moot since it's more about fan followings/money) is how many un-ranked or barely ranked teams get to play on New Year's Day, which is one of the biggest days of bowl season (or used to be). Upsets are cool and all, but so are actual marquee match ups.

Chris, that is great advice to fans. We definitely need to cherish what we're experiencing in basketball right now. I was lucky enough to be a student at ISU during the Fizer/Tinsley era. And while I enjoyed the crap out of that 2-year run, I don't think I fully appreciated how special it was while it was happening, and I'm a lifelong ISU fan.

When something special is happening, there is a temptation to believe the good times are here to stay, and that's not always the case. 32-5 and 25-6 were followed immediately by 12-19 and 17-14, and very limited success over the next decade.

And don't forget ISU's return to a bowl game for the first time in 20 some years in between those two seasons as well as Bill's team winning conference titles. Luckily my buddy and I constantly reminded each other to enjoy it while it was happening because who knows how long it will last.

No kidding. It was an amazing era, and I feel lucky to have been on campus for it all. If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? Regardless, kudos to you for having perspective, as it was something I lacked, many times, while in the moment.
