In the last minute of the game last night a flagrant 1 was called on UNI. What I saw was a UNI player with position under the basket and maybe slipping a bit as a WVU shot went up. A WVU player came running in and jumped from a distance to try to rebound/dunk the ball. The WVU player skied over The WVU guy who never jumped. As the WVU player was about to grab the ball with his right hand his left hand palm was on the backboard as he tried to complete the play. He missed the shot and came down on the UNI guy who never jumped and was maybe slipping. The UNI guy tried to catch the WVU guy fell but was unsuccessful and the WVU player came down hard. I'm hoping some knowledgeable folks saw this in real time and can comment on the following:
  • Is it Offensive goal-tending if the offensive player touches the backboard with his palm while trying to gather a rebound?
  • It seems like if an ISU player crashed the boards like this an offensive foul would be called as the WVU player seemed to aggressively jump over the UNI guy? If the UNI guy jumps up it seems it would be over the back but the UNI guy did not appear to have good footing and maybe was slipping so I can kind of see how you can call a foul since the UNI guy was moving but...
  • They also called a flagrant 1, I wondered how that play was called a flagrant 1?
Hoping someone on this board, who is knowledgeable on the sport, can explain the call to me, unfortunately the announcers sucked.

I didn't really care who won but am just interested in the rules and how they apply to this play as it seemed an odd call to me.

Note: The floor was very slippery for both teams so its maybe why the UNI player looks like he's on ice skates.

Niang was called for a foul while sitting on the ground and a KU player fell on him...So there's that.

1. It is not offensive goal-tending for having a hand on the backboard, no differently than it is not defensive goal tending when trying to block a shot and hitting the back board.

2. UNI's defender, although having position under the basket, did not make contact with the WVU player before he jumped. Had he made contact, it would've been over the back. You are not allowed to box out a player after he's already left the floor for the rebound, and as showed it can be a safety issue. That's why it was a flagrant foul.

It was a clear undercut, the guy was stepping backwards and attempting to box out Emmitt Matthews who's knees were on the same level as the UNI player's eyes. Taking someone out of the air like that is the most dangerous thing you can do in basketball and I'm shocked that it didn't result in Matthews getting concussed considering how hard his head whacked off the ground. You want to avoid a foul as a defender in that situation, jump vertically and go after the ball. Then, if there's collision in the air, it's probably going to be an over-the-back and won't result in someone falling 11 feet out of the air and landing on his head.

I agree that venue was awful though. I hate playing in these slapdick 3rd-rate early season tourneys that are played in the conference room of a hotel in a resort town. You can't get good practice time in, the rims are always way too stiff, the AC can't handle that many people and that kind of activity and it's always 80+ degrees on the floor, the confined backdrops are initially kind of weird for shooter who are used to playing in 10000+ seat real basketball arenas.
