Hy Vee Cream Soda in the blue/white can.

I remember as a kid going to Hy-Vee and they had their soda for $1 and I could pick out like eight cans. That was the first time I had cream soda and the can was white and blue and it made it taste crisp and cool LOL. Later I had cream soda for the first time from a&w and The brown tint of the can and the soda. It just not as refreshing. The Hy-Vee liquid was clear so as a kid it just really hit the spot
Im guessing it was similar to Shasta cream soda etc. The generic brand cream sodas all seem to be similar, sams choice, shasta, etc all are the clear and more crisp flavor. A&W is different than those.

I remember getting the generic versions, like Shasta as a kid and fell in love with it, too. But the A&W is not the same. So, if you can find a generic or store brand version, it will be closer to what you remember.

Also if you are in SouthEastern Minnesota area, give Spring Grove Pop a try.

There was a small chain in CR-IC called Dill Burger. For a while dill spread was carried everywhere in CR, all sub sandwiche shops, including Subway offered it.

Speaking of Hardee’s, they used to actually charbroil their burgers. Maybe they still do, but it’s different now. The flavor is nowhere close to how they were when they were in the little styrofoam burger containers.

Portillo's (up here in Chicagoland) burgers remind me of that flavor. Their burgers are pretty good.
At the Portillo's we have here, I would agree that the burgers are good. What's weird is that the traditional Chicago foods (hot dogs and Italian beef) are very so-so.

Sadly, the family sold Portillo's to private equity recently and the food quality has declined noticeably.

I would have more comments about private equity but I don't want to Cave this thread.

I will randomly crave the chips and salsa from Diamond Dave's. The salsa was in a ketchup bottle to squirt on the chip. It was amazing. I haven't been able to find anything similar.
Never had Diamond Dave's, but Carlos O'Kelly's leaving Ames (and the metro) was a dark day. Their salsa is excellent. The only good thing about having kids that play in the Iowa Star conference is we get a few trips to Waterloo/CF each sports season.
