The telegraph operators of the 1800s made up a lot of abbreviations. These are still in use by ham radio operators today (using Morse Code).
Here's a few of these...
WX = weather
OM = "old man" (shorthand for a male of any age)
YL = "young lady" (female of any age)
XYL = your wife (ie former YL)
73 = best regards
SK = silent key (end of transmission or an operator who has died)
