I don't get this fascination with having Fred yell a lot. Just because he is not going complete Fran-lunatic does not mean he is not communicating a sense of urgency.

What determines the success of a Coach in College is RECRUITING. Not YELLING. IMO Coach K, Izzo, and the guys who get angry at every call and yell in the players faces look silly. The reason they win is they have the best players and they teach them how to play together. The demeanor that you see on the floor is in part a reflection of the Coach, but in a much greater way it is a reflection of the player. There is a reason Korie is not at MSU anymore, and Clyburn has had a year off and is transitioning from the MWC. We need a team with a point guard that understands the rigors of a Big 12 season, this is Korie's first, and a group of players around him to feed off of the intensity. We will have to wait for it, and Fred did a nice ob of getting Maurice Jones, and I cannot wait for Man Man to get here.

Threads like this just prove that we will complain about everything. Fred is the best thing to happen to ISU BB since Johnny Orr and maybe even better, and we bag on him. It's a bad loss and we have them all of the time. It's baffling, but it happens to all teams.

Fred is being out coached too, how about some press to jump start things? Reign in the 3s some. Push the ball after made baskets. Common Fred, you can't just game plan for the big ones

Just a hunch... I would bet the coach and his assistants prep for them all the same. If you think of something sitting on your couch, my guess is the former B12 Coach Of The Year and his staff may have considered the same thing. None of us on here know more about basketball than any coach sitting on that bench.

Unless Bobby Lutz is on here?

If Fred can't light a fire under his team because of a heart condition, then maybe he isn't in the right profession?

And at the VERY least he needs to send messages with playing time then, if he's not going to get in their faces.

Watching tonight's game I found myself wondering what in the world KL and Clyburn have to do to get yanked? Obviously there isn't anything? If I'm Naz Long, I'm thinking about transferring at this point. KL can go out there and stink it up ALL night long and cost us possession after possession, but yet I don't even get in the game for a stinkin' minute? I'm sorry, I just don't get it.

If you have guys that are playing stupid and aren't listening to you, then you MUST yank them... period. Right now KL must be thinking that he can do whatever he pleases everytime down the court because Fred won't sit him.

You know who is an in-your-face coach? Bob Huggins. And we beat them. So was that d-bag Calhoun at UConn and we beat him. And Frank Martin. And we beat him.

This is fairly stupid.

Being calm on the sidelines is Fred's personality. He's said mulitiple times that from his expirence teams react to coaches like that better. That being said, I've heard that he can be tough and yell in practice. Is it a perfect style? No. My personal feeling on last night that he was hoping that by staying calm the guys could somehow pull out the win.

I don't think it has anything to do with his heart. I think it has everythign to do with his personality. He almost played after the pacemaker was put in. And (I could be wrong) I always thought that his heart condition had nothing to do with stress and was a physical issue.

Frank Martin had several KSU players last year indicating they were going to transfer, he leaves and they stay. Too much hot headedness and it also become ineffective.

Fred is Fred. Look at CPR vs Captain Kirk....totally different demeanor....both have had success (Kirk several very good seasons).

He has said multiple times that his emotions/reactions on the side lines are not hindered by his heart condition. Do you really think he would be coaching if his heart condition was that sensitive?

Exactly. He's addressed that many, many times.

You're almost quoting him from his hiring press conference. His heart issues aren't stress related. He's just a calm person, and that's usually a pretty good type to be.

Where they love the governor
I think we need to fire Fred and unretire his number. Scrub all references to him from the record books, Hilton, and the university. Burn his house to the ground. Have the mods make "Fred" and "Hoiberg" censored out.

To replace him, we should hire Bill O'Reilly. He yells and gets angry quite often, ergo he would be a perfect coach.

Absolutely correct

And to quote a famous CF philosopher, "Let me mayor coach"

I just hope Freddy doesn't bottle it all up inside. Remember Fred, serenity now, insanity later!

I am glad Fred is our coach. I think he has done an awesome job in recruiting. I think his game strategy has been way better than anyone expected when ISU hired him with no previous coaching experience. His style on the sideline is his own. Even though he may not be yelling his head off, I guarantee the players know what he is feeling/thinking during the game. It is like with my kids, I don't really yell at them, but I guarantee they know when I am ****** or unhappy with them.

Last night was about effort. As a team we had none. I can not name one player on the team that played his butt off. As a college basketball player, that is unacceptable. This is what I was disappointed about last night. And I don't blame Fred for this.

I hate these threads. Hoiberg's emotion is not the problem. If you've been watching for the last 3 years you would see Fred's style has likely gotten more out of players than most other coaches could have. Case in point: Dante. The kids can play without fear of getting yelled at for a mistake.

I am just as bitter about this loss as the next fan, but creating a thread to bash Hoiberg after one loss is plain stupid.

I decided after reading through this thread that I hate the internet.

After games like this (and Iowa), I have to avoid CF for a couple days before the negativity on here carries over to my work.

I totally agreed. Dweebs criticizing a coach with 10 yr NBA experience, league leading stats (3 pointers) and NBA front office experience. Definitely, he is one of the best things to happen to Cyclone athletics. To the critics, take a deep breath and think before you write. If a player at this level needs to be yelled at during the game, then he should not be on the team. Fred does his yelling when it has effect - during practice. It's an illusion to think that players need to be yelled at in public. Fred has more respect for his players than that.....IMO

What are the chances Fred reads this thread and proceeds to powerbomb the next player to have a turnover?

:jimlad: (I wish this wasn't needed)

Didn't read the whole thread (sue me) but does anyone know if Fred was sweating last night? I think we really need to start paying attention to this, as this is obviously a good indicator of effort and "want".
