That may be the best piece you've ever written, well stated. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for sharing. Paisley was definitely not just a dog. She was a Cyclone Fanatic.

Sorry for your loss Chris. That just sucks. The incredible memories will last forever. It's what dogs do.

Sorry for your loss Chris. I have read many of your articles, and although all were well written, this one touches home. My family will keep Ashley and you in our prayers. I can't imagine loosing my dog, who is a 7yr old beagle.

Very sorry, Chris. I never had a dog until I met my fiance a few years back. She had recently saved Walter (beagle/shepherd mix) from a shelter here in Chicago right before I met her. 5 years later and I don't know what I'm going to do when he's gone. Same with my cats. Had them ever since I moved here 8 years ago and they were the only things I knew in this city for some time. Pets give back so much more than they take.

Chris, my condolences to you and Ashley. Dogs are family members. My lab is turning 14 in a few days, and I know her time is short -- and when the time comes, I know it'll be tough on me and my girls. But I truly think that dogs (or pets in general) were put on this earth to help us learn about life, love and the passing of loved ones. And I also believe that our dogs will be there to greet us in the Great Beyond.

im very sorry CW....ill admit i couldnt read the whole thing cause im at work and from my perspective having 2 dogs that are a huge part of my life i couldnt finish it without leaving the room. Every time ive watched Marley and Me ive cried like a little baby and thats the only movie that can do that to me. Its not just a dog, its a companion, family member and a friend. My dogs have been with me good or bad and never stopped loving me no matter what and their love unconditional...

Chris I am so sorry for your loss and can feel your pain. I went through something very similar this past November when my 5 year old Lhasa Apso came down with a rare disease called Leptospirosis. She wasn't eating or as playful as usual, but we just took it as she wasn't feeling well. The next morning it was worse and we took her in immediately, but it was too late. She went drastically downhill over the next day and we had to put her down. One of the worst feelings I have ever felt was seeing my normally happy dog in such pain. The worst part was trying to explain it all to my 3 year old son who absolutely loved playing ball and chase with her. He still to this day talks about how much he misses his puppy. I can tell you from experience that it is very hard to deal with, but everything will get better with time.

Chris, great post. Brings back those emotions of losing my childhood dog after 13 years. As you said, you either get it or you don't. Those of us that do are hurting with you. I know going to bed at night without here and coming home from work without her to meet you are especially hard. You're in our thoughts and prayers.

I know you need time to grieve and you will never replace Paisley, but hopefully there is one lucky puppy out there that will soon be meet its new Mommy and Daddy.

Deepest sympathies. Reminds me of the dog I grew up with. She was such a sweetheart. Now I have a cat, & I'll be devastated the day he's no longer with us.

Brighter days are ahead for your young family!

I'm sorry to hear about your loss Chris. I am at a loss of words...all I can say is "this sucks." I know it is a small silver lining on this dark day for you, Ashley, your family/friends and all that have met this wonderful soul named Paisley, but this is one of the best pieces you have ever written. This piece of writing, much like Paisley herself, brought a huge smile to me knowing so many were touched for simply having known her. What a powerful thing to say...she never spoke a word but was loved by all. Here is to all that Paisley was and who she will continue to be...man's best friend.

God Bless and we lost a great Cyclone today.

Well, now I feel like a real *** for making that crack about you talking about your dog all the time yesterday. The puppy my family got when I was in high school is pushing 12 and my in-laws' Keeshond (we had been dating a year when they got that puppy) just got diagnosed with stomach cancer, and I know I'll be pretty broken up when it's time to finally say goodbye to both of them.

So sorry to hear this, Chris. Losing is pet is always tough, I don't care what anybody says.

Take comfort in the fact in a mere two years she helped so many other people. How many of us can say that?
