Oh I wouldn't buy into the conspiracy theory stuff too much. If that's a case, then the same powers have conspired to turn Iowa Basketball over the last 30 years into the mediocre program it is and has built ISU basketball during the same time frame.

We made a lot of mistakes in football during the 80's and early 90's. Hiring Dan McCareny and spending money on the program after that were good moves. The end of the McCarney era was painful and hiring Gene Chizik could have been a huge goof, but we got a reprieve and I believe have a guy in place now who can really do well. What the program needs do do now is generate more dollars.

We have a guy in place now who can really do well? You cannot be serious. He's proven he can't and fits right in with the rest of our mediocre football legacy.

Actually I don't think you are correct. Earle Bruce's frost three years he went 3-8, then went 8-3 the following three years.

I was was recruited by Coach Bruce in 1975. A very unassuming man. Nice guy, very honest and straight forward. He had great assistants.

The biggest issue back then was the racial issue at ISU. I remember eating at the training table and the divide was apparent. I think there were two running backs back then, one white, the other black...and the media tabbed them as the W W Express. I think their names were Jim Wingender and the last name of the other back was Williams. It was the Williams that told me at a party if I was uncomfortable with the racial tension, then I shouldn't go to ISU. Scared the crap out of me. I was definitely a naive small town Iowa farm boy back then.

I think it was in '77 and '78 that they defeated Nebraska back to back in somewhat convincing manner. Names back then were Wayne Stanley, Buddy Hardeman, wingander, Williams. On my recruit trip, I stayed with a guy from Harlan. I blink his name was Larson. They called him Tank. He was a monster.

anyway, that's what I recall. I may stand corrected but I think I'm correct. It might have been in Bruce's last year, all they had to do was beat Oklahoma State, and they would have won at least a piece of the conference title. We lost that game, and I think it was in Stillwater.

Yhis is really taxing my memory.

ISU had 4-7 record in Earle Bruce's first there years. Look it up. In 1976, ISU beat Nebraska at home. Luther Blue's KO return for a TD was the highlight. The next year ISU beat Nebraska at Lincoln.

1976 was the year they lost at Stillwater.

Hardeman, Stanley, Blue, all graduated in 1976. Wingender and Williams were 1975 I think.

Yur forgetting the defense with Tom Randall...Mike and Marlon Stensrud and Tom Boskey and Ron McFarland...

Mike' brother was Maynard, but you're right, that defense had a lot of studs that could blow people up. I think Tom Perticone was also in that group who was a big hitter.

Duncan's first year in 1979 was an injury-riddled 3-8 season. As noted above ISU started 5-0 in 1980 and was ranked in the top 20, but lost 5 in a row after that. In 1981 ISU was ranked #11 at one point in the season but faded and still had a shot at the Independence Bowl if thay had beaten OK St. in the finale game. Duncan beat Iowa three years in a row (80-81-82) including Iowa's 1982 Rose Bowl team.

In 1981, we had to settle for a tie at #5 Oklahoma when Alex Giffords missed a last minute chip shot field goal. Hadn't beaten OK in many, many years. Lots of us screaming at the radio since not many games were on TV back then.

Wikipedia says he was 4-7 three straight years then 8-3 plus two bowl losses the next three. I'm sorry. For some reason I had in my head he was 3-8 for three then 8-3 the next three. Anyway.....sorry

Merry Christmas

Wikipedia is right re 4-7 for Earle's 1st three years....Same as Cyclone Memories.....

Wasn't Bruce Reimers from Humboldt in that same timeframe?

Yes Bruce Reimers was from Humboldt and still lives up there, Bruce was recruited by Donnie Duncan and finished as a senior for Jim Criner...
