he surely won't be able to correct his size disadvantage. that just means he will have to move around in the pocket and messingham will have to call plays to his strength. drew brees is his height.

Tech was worse. Many were ragging on Steele for "not stepping up into the pocket" - there wasn't any semblance of a pocket against the red raiders, all game, even when they didn't blitz. I thought at times against KSU we did a good job giving JB a few seconds.

Worst part about that game is the reads were there for the running back but Jantz carried the ball too much.

How many quarterbacks are Colin Klein size? Anymore defensive lineman have 6 inches on quarterbacks.
Geno Smith: 6-3 214
Collin Klein: 6-5 226
Landry Jones: 6-4 218
Casey Pachall: 6-5 226 (Boykin 6-2 215)
Seth Doege: 6-1 197
Nick Florence: 6-1 205
Wes Lunt: 6-4 211 (J.W. Walsh 6-2 205)
David Ash: 6-3 223 (Case McCoy 6-2 200)
Dayne Crist: 6-4 235
Jared Barnett: 6-1 199 (Steele Jantz 6-3 224)

How many Klein's size? Not very many. How many of the other quarterbacks Barnett's size have issues throwing? None.

Drew Brees has one of the biggest arms in the NFL

Oh that group who has had the most inconsistent line play? And there is your answer.
Hell Kansas had their way all day with OSU up front, Crist is just color blind.

I also wonder if some of the problems we are having are just due to him being a sophomore. Many of the better QB's we've had didn't get the starters role until their junior season. The fanbase didn't make judgements about them until they had time to develop. While I'm not calling Barnett the next Rosenberg or Seneca, we need to realize that he isn't an upperclassman yet and he's only in there because of the lack of options available.

Well, his arm strength is fine if we only ask him to throw certain throws. Some of the passes we ask him to throw, he simply cannot make. And there's no disputing that. Beating 3 of the 4 worst defenses in the country last year doesn't change that either. And his accuracy has always been an issue, even more so than Steele's, who people love to call out.

It is what it is. If JB continues to be our QB, it will be because of his leadership and Steele's inability to reduce the turnovers.

I don't know about this. He had some nice long balls against TCU, something Steele has never been able to pull off in a game. Maybe on shorter throws Steel has the advantage, but over-all, I wouldn't say by much, unless you count Steele's ability to complete passes to the other team in the red zone.

I do believe both of our QBs would have better results behind a line that gave each of them more time to throw. In the end, I believe we are choosing between the lesser of two evils right now. And not throwing INTs in the red zone, or turning the ball over on crucial drives has put one guy as our starter.

I will root for whomever is out there, but honestly, I like having JB out there better, if nothing else, I'm not constantly wodering when the next turnover is coming. It sucks that we don't have a super stud QB, but with our D, I'm more content having a game manager as opposed to the gunslinger out there.

In the end, it baffles me we are still having this conversation. Both QBs have proved they can win and they can lose, why can't we as fans, for once, just trust the coaches are doing the best thing for the team and leave it be. Why does rooting for one QB as the starter have to lead to bashing the other? I'm guilty of it as well, but I do wish we could realize this is what we have, it's really not going to change, no matter who is starting.

Remember that post where you in essence told me to keep in mind the old adage that you can keep your mouth shut and let people think you're an idiot or open it and confirm it?

But at least you didn't cherry pick the one guy in the NFL who isn't tall and has success. I'm sure you'd also say we should have a shooting guard the size of Earl Boykins since he got to the NBA as well? We shouldn't bother recruiting post guys above 6'5" because Mr. Pratt was a hell of an interior defender despite being that tall?

And last thing: I will eat my foot if Barnett is actually 6'1". Maybe with his cleats and his helmet on but there's no way he's 6'0" tall, let alone 6'1".

He was so poor Saturday that it wouldn't have hurt. BUT...I don't know if he'd have made it to the K State game without getting pulled for SJ.

If he wins 3/4 more games as a starter it will be OK living with him for a couple more years. But we need to get a good transfer in. There are options who are backups who this coaching staff needs to try and get to transfer. They should have got Bolden from PSU even if he sucks hes better than JB. I want the Oregon kid who lost his job to Mariota. Or the Wiscy kid who Obrien took his job. Phillip Sims might have come here instead of UVA from Bama.

What does size matter? A quarterback could be 5' or 7' if there is no passing lanes and/or protection up front, the quarterback completes next to nothing. The goal of defensive line is to plug the passing lanes, the goal of the offensive line is to create passing lanes for the quarterback to see the receivers. No matter if the quarterback is 7' the defensive line, if not blocked properly, will have their hands in the air to obscure the quarterbacks view. That is what pass blocking is all about. And Saturday was not the offensive lines day for pass blocking. I saw countless times where there was virtually no pocket and zero passing lanes for Barnett to throw through. All the DE/DTs did was put up their hands and Barnett missed wide open guys (the Shontrelle Johnson pass pops right into my mind) or the ball was tipped at the line or thrown into the dirt.

He's thrown the ball how many times now? How many of them have been good passes? Maybe 10? Keep in mind the people who are catching punts and kicks before the game are throwing it 40 yards downfield just slinging it. I don't throw a football a couple hundred times a day and can throw it further than that. His arm strength is, very nicely putting it, poor. Watch when he throws a slant or the receiver screen...the ball floats out to the target instead of going to the target on a rope like it does when Jantz tosses it.

If you want to keep on saying it, that's fine but it won't make it true. If he had an incredibly week arm he would have a hell of a time making that corner through he almost always puts on the money. Barnett's issue is that the ball doesn't always come out clean. When it doesn't it floats. If it comes out clean he has enough velocity and strength to do what he needs to do. It's not Steeles arm, but it's not his mind either.

Watching them even just warming up, Steele has far superior arm strength. Obviously he makes very poor choices. With poor arm strength, you think maybe focus on the short passes, screens, slants etc. But he can't throw it over the the line for some of that stuff. The lack of arm strength puzzles me. Can't he improve that? He's at least as big as Seneca, isn't he? Granted, Seneca could move all around the pocket and defense had to play him differently because of his speed, but it just seems like they should be able to get JB throwing a better looking ball with some work.

What does size matter? Being able to see downfield. Why do you think the average quarterback in the NFL is 6'3" or 6'4"? So when there are 5 6'6"+ offensive linemen and defense linemen in front of them they can see. We make the problem worse by having 5'6" receivers where there is next to no room for error throwing...when you can see them at least.

And the pass blocking wasn't that bad Saturday. They weren't rushing hard the majority of the time and had the defensive ends stay back so that Barnett couldn't just scramble behind a defensive end going too far up the field. For as much pressure as you claim, Kansas State also never had a sack.

There's a reason guys with cannons who weren't all that great in college are drafted over Graham Harrell. You don't just work out and get a stronger arm.

Crap, don't really know much about Harrell but been thinking the Packers really should be looking to pick up someone like Seneca, cause if they lose Rodgers to injury, they are toast.

Ok I am lost now, you are disproving this point from above

Geno Smith: 6-3 214
Collin Klein: 6-5 226
Landry Jones: 6-4 218
Casey Pachall: 6-5 226 (Boykin 6-2 215)
Seth Doege: 6-1 197
Nick Florence: 6-1 205
Wes Lunt: 6-4 211 (J.W. Walsh 6-2 205)
David Ash: 6-3 223 (Case McCoy 6-2 200)
Dayne Crist: 6-4 235
Jared Barnett: 6-1 199 (Steele Jantz 6-3 224)

I wonder, had he been playing all year, would he be a little more comfortable throwing the ball at this point? My reason for asking is maybe he will get better with some more games under his belt?

I think Barnett (and the offense) will get better because he will be coached and we've played the best statistical defenses with the exception of OU so far. Kansas State is a really good team and we have to keep that in mind. There is still so much out there for this team and I think they will respond. It's refreshing to know that we should be in every game. I'm more concerned about White coming back.
