After the loss to A&M, the Bama ranking is, of course, debatable.
I think of it this way, who would Vegas take right now on a neutral field-- Alabama or TOE?
I think our initial drop was about right but I think the second drop has been to extreme. People keep liking to point out that we haven’t beaten anyone but they seem to ignore the reality of the losses. We lost to Iowa but they are now ranked number two. In past years TAMU has losses to Bama by like 25 and still been ranked in the top ten. Our other loss was on the road to a good team that we frankly dominated other than the scoreboard. We should drop some but we should be a marginal top 25 team.Perhaps Alabama should have slid a bit further. That said, there was absolutely no injustice done to ISU in its fall in/from the rankings. ISU was overhyped in the preseason both by the media and in-house. Alabama's status is very different based on years of domination.
For ISU, It's gonna be really hard to earn our way back into a 15 or higher ranking. One bitten, twice shy. Alabama will probably still make the playoff.
Are current rankings supposed to be for this season's results, or are they meant to be rankings based on the past 5-10 years? As much as I hate SEC bias in the media, Bama is still Bama so they're going to get the benefit of the doubt after dropping a game. When was the last time Alabama lost two regular season games under Saban?
I'm hoping for a Mississippi- Kentucky CCG.
No doubt this season, but that's what happens when you have a human element to a ranking or a playoff committee. Despite what anyone says, people have there bias. This is why the NFL has a better model for deciding the postseason. It's not always fair but at least everyone fully understands the rules in place to decide whether or not you make the postseason. Are current rankings supposed to be for this season's results, or are they meant to be rankings based on the past 5-10 years?
I don't think it is either. Bama should be ranked higher than ISU. You totally missed my point. My post had nothing to do with Iowa State's ranking. It had to do with the post I quoted that pointed out Bama's history and that being justification for Bama getting the benefit of the doubt in ranking. Everyone knows that teams with history do get that benefit, but should something that guys now in their 30s did when they played for a team really matter when you are ranking the team that is taking the field this year? This Alabama team is 5-1, and this Iowa State team is 3-2. I don't think it is a stretch to have Alabama ranked higher than Iowa State at this point in this season.
No, I got your point, and I agree that past year's teams should have no bearing on ranking this year's teams. I am definitely a this year is this year guy. Each team is different in make up and what they do well. Alabama had a historically great team last year, but all of those trophies are in the NFL now. This year's team is not anywhere near as good (although they are still more talented than most teams).I don't think it is either. Bama should be ranked higher than ISU. You totally missed my point. I gulp when I say this, but I think Iowa would beat this year's Alabama team. The Hawkeyes are playing like an old fashioned Gene Stallings Alabama team, and the Iowa defense would eat Bryce Young up.
I also think Alabama had no business being ranked #1, is ranked too high at #5 and will lose at least one other SEC game and not make the SEC Championship Game. no playoff for 'Bama! Not a second guess either, as I mentioned that previously a few weeks back in some other thread on the subject. I specifically saw the A&M loss coming.
I also feel sorry for whichever team draws Alabama in a non-playoff Bowl, because they will be in for a tough assignment just like Michigan State in 2010 and Michigan in 2019 (the last two years Alabama lost two or more regular season games).
As for Iowa State, they haven't done anything to deserve being ranked at this time, but hopefully, that will change in the next two weeks! I hope the solid win over KU carries over, and the Cyclones can start playing up to their potential each week for the rest of the season. Winning out is not out of the questions if they focus.
Oddly, if things fall wrong for Alabama and fall right for ISU, we could see them meet in the Sugar Bowl (hope not). I would love for ISU to be in the Sugar Bowl, but I'd rather Alabama go to the Citrus and play a B1G team.

Or forget conferences in football and "seed" teams every 4 years to a district. Based on the last 4 years body of work.Rankings are so stupid and one of the reasons I'm starting to enjoy NFL more than college. Iowa is not the 2nd best team in the nation. There are not four better teams than Alabama in the country. I hope whenever CFB hopefully goes to four 16 team conferences, they do away with rankings and just let the results on the field do the talking
Not this year!Bama’s defense would score more points than Iowa’s offense
You’re out of your mind. Not this year!
