Disagree, I think the right coach could mean 1-2 more wins.

OK. So what do you think the likelyhood of us landing an Urban Meyer or Harbaugh type is? Because that's what it would take.

I'm not ready to start from scratch again just yet. We have a good shot at a win in Manhattan & could be competitive in Morgantown.

You may get your wish if assistants start bailing, however. Will Tommy Mangino stick around? Blaney? If there's a mass exodus of offensive staff, then yeah- **** it. We'll be starting from scratch anyways.

I see improvement, but basically it just looks like it took 6.5 years to figure out that the simpler you keep things, the better they tend to go.

Otherwise there was nothing shocking about seeing ISU come out of halftime with a 3-score lead, and in the end not making the plays to win, while the other team did. That's a mindset that hasn't seemed to move much.

We need Harbaugh or Urban Meyer to know the down and distance? To make a single adjustment in a ******* football game?!?!?!?! Just one?!?!?!?! The entire ******* year?

You people are out of your minds.

Am I the only one that has seen improvement since Lanning became the starting quarterback and Mangino was let go? I see improvement on both sides of the ball. We have the first 1,000 yard rusher since ARob. We have a mobile quarterback that rushed for over 100 yards last game. We held the 8th ranked team in the nation to 34 points, and oh did I forget, we led the game except for the last 5 minutes. All I see are people bad mouthing a coaching staff that is trying to get things going in a positive direction. I see people bad mouthing our players and saying they are not good enough to get wins. This is Iowa State, we are not Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, or even this year (I hate to say it) Iowa. We are a work in progress and I am satisfied that things are moving in the right direction. If we pick up a few good JUCO players to fill a few holes for next year, we have a good core of returning players that can win.

I see this even more of a reason to make a coaching change to not "waste" the talent on this team next year. Why not hire someone else to see if they can utilize the talent on this team instead of losing close game after close game?

If we are truly improved, we will go down next week and handily beat a bad Kansas State team.

35-21.

I really don't think we will. In fact, I predict we will lose a close game.

Sounds like the rallying cry of folks out east who wanted to can another bonehead coach who finally figured out how to take advantage of a cupcake schedule. Really wish they had...

Folks who think we can magically turn things around with a new staff in ONE year are out of their minds.

Report Card or what I think I see out there

QB (B) - Improved, more run threat, more arm speed, more resiliency
RB (B+) - improved just in time and a strong point
OLINE (C+) - adequate, better than last year
TE (C)- not involved for passing
WR (B+)- lots of potential, can make catches better with more accurate poasser
PR (B+)- good to abovegrade
K (C+)- short kicks and explained away that it is on purpose, goiod coverage group
KR (B)- shows potential
LS (A-)- consistent
H (B-)- flamboyant
P(2) (C+) - servicable
KO (C+)- short
Dline (B) - getting the job done, can be up and down depending on opponent
LB (C+)- okay with some decent tackling
CB (D+) - wish they could knock a pass down
SS (D+) - hope they can keep closer to WRs

A or A- 9th in Kickoff return defense in FBS. They do an excellent job with the KO defense. between the hash and the sideline and catches it inside the 5 almost every time.

He's a poor coach who inherited a roster ready to win and managed roughly .500 seasons.
Realignment only hinders a very poor coach.

So that roster was "ready to win" but looked like crap the year before in losing 10 consecutive games to end the season while finishing winless in the Big 12. And we played in the Big 12 North Division which only had 1 ranked team in 2008.

LOL. Congrats.....for giving me a good laugh with that idiotic post of yours. LOL.

You must be a bunch of young Cyclone fans. I went to school in the early 1970's. I remember all being mediocre years except when Earl Bruce and Johnny Majors were the coaches. Donnie Duncan, Walden, Chizek, need I go on. McCarney took us to how many bowl games? You were spoiled by the first three years CPR was here and think we are in a position to do that each year. We are not there yet and no one has ever gotten us there since I was in college. I just want to see improvement on a consistent basis. Someday we will be there and be able to compete on a consistent basis. I get tired of throwing away all the progress that has been made to change coaches with the pipe dream of being 8-4 or better every year.

NO ONE on this site is expecting 8-4 every year. Most fans are rational and want to be in the hunt for a bowl game most years with the occasional rebuilding year(s) and maybe an occasional "good" year.

One thing I do know is that 8 wins in 3 years is NOT ACCEPTABLE and a coach should not be rewarded with another year.

Agreed
The meltdown this week is embarrassing. And when you call them out, they bring up losses weeks or even years ago disregarding the obvious positive steps made since Lanning began starting. I will say, Lanning has to better on short open passes in the pocket next year for us to make any big strides offensively.

Because this isn't basketball. Quick turnarounds in football are not the norm. It takes time.

Jamie Pollard did a pretty good job of evaluating potential coaches before the Chizik hire. Harbaugh, Brian Kelly, and Chizik were the finalists. He just made the wrong final decision (in hindsight of course).

We aren't going to hire a Meyer or Harbaugh. But we might find the NEXT Meyer or Harbaugh. But I will guarantee you one thing...Paul Rhoads is not the next Urban Meyer or Jim Harbaugh. It's time to move on to try and find that guy.

8 year turnarounds are the norm in football either. It is very rare that a coach finally hits his stride in Year 8.

I would be my house that another up and coming coach (Dino Babers, PJ Fleck, etc.) could win an equal amount of games that Paul Rhoads has in the last 3 years. And I'm 90% confident they could win more.

Are you always negative?

I'm not a negative person but after watching 3 years of losses rack up, many in the same fashion, how are you NOT negative when if comes to Iowa State football?

I mean how many people could have predicted we would lose that OSU game? Most fans saw that letdown coming a mile away.

Not sure Harbaugh would have had the success here that he has had at Michigan.

Exactly why I said THE PLAYERS deserve another shot with this staff. I'm sure next year's huge senior class would prefer to sink with this ship than be cast aside as a new staff looks to the future.

I'm starting to hate coming on to this site anymore. It's like stepping into some bizarre alternate reality where 8-26 and six straight losing seasons are a good thing. The "We Are Iowa State" mentality has ruined the perspective of so many fans.

Rhoads will come back next year and miss a bowl yet again...but we'll choke away a couple more close games against good teams, and the heads-in-sand crowd will continue to bleat about how we're just one more year away.
