From the city of Ames website:

"Based on the 2010 census, the population for Ames, Iowa, is 58,965. This number includes students attending Iowa State University who reside in Ames during the school year or longer."

City of Ames : Quick Facts About Ames

Yep, but only those who filled out the census and claimed Ames. Population without the students (besides those who actually are permanent residents) is really unknown, just speculating I would say around 50,000 though.

Wow, you must've never left the state of Iowa if you would consider any drive in Ames to be long or traffic to be bad.

Its nothing compared to traffic waits in some major cities, for sure, but for a city its size ames's street system kinda sucks.

The student population is included in the census total of 59,000. It seems like more when there are breaks and summertime, but consider that at no point do ALL students leave Ames when classes aren't in session. There are several thousand foreign and out-of-town students (and their families in some cases) who stay year-round. There are a good number who are non-traditional students who live here anyway. Plus you have however many more locals (from Iowa or the midwest in general) who stick around and choose not to return home for breaks for whatever reason.

Bottom line is that the more people who get counted in each census, the more federal money Ames will receive to make improvements and expansions. Plus, it makes it much more likely that Ames will get more and more new restaurants and stores. The new retail and eatery chains that are here and soon to be here are proof of that.

I can't imagine this happens in Morgantown, WV (pop. 29660) with WVU (enrollment 29306) which would only leave 354 people in the town that don't go to school there.

The fact that so many double-professional-income families live in Ames makes it nice in many respects. Ames (Story County) actually ranks fairly high on per capita household income for the US, as well as PhDs per capita. Add in the DOT, USDA, research companies, and some higher end manufacturing (e.g. Sauer-Danfoss), and you have the foundation of a decent small city.

Exactly. Ames only hates the students when they are acting entitled, destructive, or disrespectful to others. They hate the same thing in other adults, as well.

Working at the DPS always loved running into those entitled students. I'm walking down Lincoln way with a painting out of the MU, but you shouldn't send me to jail because my dad is...fill in the blank...usually someone I've never heard of.

I'm have heard that Kohl's already owns land in Ames and has for years, although I don't know where exactly. Keep in mind I said "heard".

I hate the long waits and increased traffic that students bring. As well as the increased number of people who don't know how to drive. Thats the only part about the students that I don't like.

I know that 9 minute rush hour at 5:03 pm is a killer...

The metro population is 89,542 for the 2010 census. 59,000 is just for the city. Once a city passes 50k, it and the surrounding area (usually that county) is designated a "metropolitan area" by the government. We became that in 2000.

The MSA definitions will actually change in 2012 or 2013 and new MSA definitions and thus numbers will come out. For Ames, it won't change because Ames is in the middle of nowhere, but just in general this is how it works. There are a lot of mathematical models that go on for figuring out which counties reside in which MSAs and they're doing this now.

So I wouldn't pay too much attention to MSA numbers around the US for 2010 because many will change, although I think Ames is pretty safe unless they decide to include another random county for no reason.

You'd think a town that large would have better shopping and dining options :)

Most places with 50k-75k do not have shopping, especially ones that are primarily college towns. 98% of students are poor, so they don't have to shop and ISU is not in a big enough area to get bigger shopping because most companies would lose revenue in the long-ish run (and probably short run).

Dining options, yeah maybe. Not bad for a town of its size though. I have had a few good things to eat in Ames. One place in particular ..one dish was comparable to a place I went here in Chicago owned by a guy who's won International Chef of the Year from James Beard. Never would have thought it in Ames, but yeah. There's possibilities.

Its not as much the rush hour, its more of a consistent suck with the design of the whole city. No good ways to get from one place to the other a lot of the time.

Ha, traffic in Ames? Actually this is true SOMETIMES. There are a few areas of town I remember where the traffic flow is not good and seems uncharacteristic of a small city. Well maybe one...on Duff Avenue. No idea what time, but yeah don't remember it lasting for more than maybe 30 minutes.

Come out here and deal with some of the traffic. Just one reason I sold my car..

Yeah something like that. Not terrible though, but it shouldn't happen in a small city like that. It seems as if the traffic engineering in certain places is just....off
