I'm starting to think he'd only take the ND job at the college level. I could see him eventually going to the NFL, but I think he really likes the college ranks.

I'm preparing for him to leave, but for some reason I'm not worried about it. I think he's just a different dude. And I think he has the perfect model in Iowa City of a guy who put off other offers, stayed put, built a program, made more money than he could ever want, and has unending job security. And if he needs a testimonial on taking a "better job" with a team that is fundamentally broken, I know a guy from Ames he could chat with.

I can appreciate some of these guys are competitive and would love to be the guy to "turn around" a program. But for every example of a big name school getting turned around, there are a dozen failed attempts. They will give you 2-3 years and run you off. You won't have the time and patience to restore those wrecks.

The list is sizable on this stuff. Guys like Rich Rod, Charlie Strong, Steve Sarkisian, Derek Dooley, Butch Jones, Kevin Sumlin, Jim McElwain, etc. All guys who tried the bigger, better job and didn't make it more than 3 years. Seems like Harbaugh, Helton, Herman and Frost aren't too far from that list. Hell, even guys James Franklin and Ed Orgeron can't have one bad year without people calling for their firing.

He's built up years and years of goodwill here. He can afford some ebbs and flows. I just don't know why you'd want to give that up for a job where you have zero goodwill and fans and an administration with no patience.
One of the side effects of the the CFP-era, everything at the power programs for a coach is defined by being able to reach the Playoff. But the problem is that the 4 programs have dominated the Playoff selection: Alabama(5), Clemson(5), Oklahoma(4), and Ohio State(3). That is 17 of 24 possible spots in the Playoff over the last 6 years being filled by 4 schools. The 4 team format has warped the perception of some fanbases.

Texas, Michigan, Florida, A&M, USC, Penn State, etc. fans all believe they should be able to make that Final 4 every year, when in reality, they are all fighting for 1 or 2 spots at best. The expectation on the coaches at these programs are almost set to a level that they are unattainable. It was healthier when each was fighting for a Conference title and a Rose/Sugar/Cotton/Orange bowl appearance. And it is part of the reason why the CFP needs to expand to at least 8 teams.

I don't think, right now, he has any interest in the NFL. In nearly every interview he does, he mentions how molding his players into better people is at the top of his priority list. Not that he couldn't do that in the NFL but the opportunities are much, much smaller.

Not exactly sure.
Think about his time here and especially his culture statement. Whether you like JP or not, he and our situation have allowed Campbell to put in his culture. Go to a Michigan, Texas, or Nebraska and you work with their culture. Two of them the donors set it, the other one has an old man who lingers to be relevant behind the scenes still with a grip on the process. None of those jobs will say go ahead and crapcan the whole situation and install whatever you want. Campbell is a control freak, not bad, just his style. Everything has to be a specific way, it has worked with us.

It’s why he came here, we were willing to level the old house and have him develop the blueprints. Other places would require you to remodel. The culture from the AD and Pres on down have to be a fit for him. Let’s not be so nervous all the time.

I’m always interested that CW says he thinks Campbell might want to be a GM. Obviously, he would know.

But I’ve always seen Campbell as a guy so focused on the coaching part.

About Texas, doesn’t JP have contract clauses that coaches cannot leave for conference members or Iowa? I thought those were in past coach contracts.

Saw some CMC to the Lions talk today. If he turned down the Jets for being the Jets then I can't see him wanting to be a part of the Lions but I guess we'll see

I'm really excited for some idiot reporter from Dallas asking Campbell about other jobs at the CCG press conference. He wont know what hit him.

Reporter looks up from his notepad to see Matt's gum chewing intensify and hit hat brim curving tighter on its own, as he glares at him.

My thoughts are this:

CW makes really good points about who his Campbell idolizes: A D3 coach, Bill Snider and I'm drawing a blank on the last one (but another Bill Snider type, maybe the Northwestern coach?). Because of this, ISU may be MC's dream job and he may be living the dream. This is my hope of course.

If MC does want another job I think it would be one of these: Cleveland Browns, Ohio State, Notre Dame or maybe Michigan. WIth Michigan, I'm not sure the current environment would be what he'd want to walk into, but I do think he'd at least talk to them.

All of that said, I'm much less worried about Campbell leaving than some of his staff. Heacock, Manning, etc all will be in high demand. A huge part of our recent success isn't just MC, but the consistency of the whole staff. I'd hate to lose that.

tOSU is probably the one to worry about if Day bolts in the next 2-3 years. That may or not happen. Think it would have to be for a Cowboys, Vikings, or Bears level of organization though. New stadiums (newly updated in Chicago), willing to spend on FA’s, hungry to win owners and fans.
