Not that it matters but his college Alma Mater, Mount Union is Methodist private school.

I don't think faith matters in the arguments of Notre Dame. I just think he knows he can get Iowa State to a level just below the huge guys (Bama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Clemson) which is the same as going to Michigan State or Purdue or West Virginia.

Matt Campbell turned around Iowa State in basically 2 years. He's now elevated it to conference contender in 4 years. He could do the same at Michigan I think. But 1) does he want to be second fiddle in his own division and 2) does he want to do another culture rebuild? Why not stick around for the next 2-4 years at Iowa State and reap what you've sown and THEN leave if that interests you. It seems silly that you've built Iowa State into a consistent Top 25 team and you can see the pathway to being a Top 15 or better team only to leave it a year or two early. Outside of crapping the bed for a couple years in a row, the shine won't be off of Matt Campbell any time soon. And even with a few bad years, that likely won't happen. Look at Pat Fitzgerald - NW is consistently decent, with a year or two of greatness, and a few years of garbage and he's still considered one of the best coaches in the country. Campbell can be the same thing at Iowa State.

I don’t think it matters either. For all we know he loves BC and hates ND. I think the Ohio State job would be a bigger worry if it opens up again.

The whole reason CMC left Toledo was because he wanted to build something special. He literally said he thought he could mold Toledo into the next Boise State.

Jamie sold him on the vision that he could do that exact same thing at Iowa State, a place with a foundation, with better resources than Toledo—but zero existing culture or tradition.

And then Jamie gave Matt Campbell the keys to build something special.

What people don’t get is that CMC wouldn’t have that same opportunity at a Michigan, a Notre Dame or an Ohio State. Sure, he could build or maintain those places at their longtime glory, but there the only achievable goal would be to become the next face on that school’s coaching Mount Rushmore.

Here, CMC is the architect, the founder. Not just another face, but hopefully the first face.

I honestly think the only way he leaves is A, for some reason he discovers that he can’t get the job done here, that he doesn’t have the needed resources, or B, he scales the mountain, and is ready for another challenge.

Personally, I don’t see that first condition happening any time soon—if it does. The second one? If CMC moves on after a national Championship or two, I promise not to complain.

Er, too much.

Now, where else could Matt Campbell find another P5 place with better resources than ISU, but zero tradition? Hint: there really isn’t one.

Go Cyclones!

Winner. This hits all the points. It's not all about money and prestige with Campbell. We can argue about how much money and prestige play a role in it for him (my guess is not a lot), but the only people that truly know that is Campbell and his inner circle. I believe he is here for the long haul and every person that says he could go to whatever NFL team or high profile school, I keep saying he has CHOSEN Iowa State for the past 5 years. We're the leader in the clubhouse right now. I could certainly be wrong, but as Campbell has asked the public in the past, please judge him by his actions and not by a bunch of rumors.

I don’t think Nick Saban could get Michigan even, or above OSU in 4 years. The combination of PSU, OSU and to a lesser extent MDs recruiting is absolutely killing them. Look at the stunts Harbaugh pulls in recruiting, those aren’t things you do if you think you’re right there, those are things you do if you’re desperate and that began year one.

He could if he was younger. I have 0% doubt. Moot point.

I did not know BC was catholic until now. Thank you, mostly worthless thread, I learned something from you.

You’re welcome. Their football game has the goofy nickname of “Holy War.” A lot easier to watch telecast now that Tony Dungy has replaced Doug Flutie on the broadcast.

Here's some quick thoughts on this topic:

There is a LOT of speculation on the future of Matt Campbell. But the key word is "speculation". All these media folks throwing MC's name for open or soon to be open positions elsewhere are simply picking names THEY think would fit well for that job. But the writers don't have any inside knowledge. These writers are simply feeding into the desire of their customer base to know who will be the next coach of their respective program.

To be fair, anyone can write up an article listing 5-10 people who they would think could be the next coach at (insert program name). It's simply click bait. Until a reputable media member has any sort of creditable information regarding MC leaving, this talk has no substance.

The only takeaway is that MC is a VERY highly respected coach and we are fortunate to call him our coach.

There's still a cult of protectionism around JoePa. Franklin is a weird guy as well. It's a very cult like mentality there, and I don't see Campbell wanting to be in that.
I personally know a few PSU fans and alumni. Cult-like is a good way to describe their fandom. It's a very odd, guarded arrogance, as if they've been enlightened to some mystical ancient knowledge of college football that other fanbases are oblivious to. It's incredibly off-putting.

Everyone wanting our coach is a good thing. If he stays long enough he could turn Iowa State into a destination school, assuming our AD keeps giving all the resources and updates/upgrades necessary. He’s building his own tradition, an elite fan base that continues to grow.

The AD can only do so much. It’s more up to the fans giving to the AD so he can provide him the wants/needs.

And I get that, we do have a great fan base. Obviously there’s a lot of great donors out there already, but for the more casual it’s easier to donate to a good team, and easier to grow your fan base if you have a good team.
