The wife and I are thinking of getting a dog. We both work full-time jobs during the day, so I was wondering if certain breeds do better being alone in the day than others? Obviously a puppy is probably out of the question because of this

Had a rescue greyhound who was very comfortable being in her kennel when we were at work.
They are also somewhat trained to potty outside and be on a leash.

How long is it left alone? I'm kind of shocked by this, as Greyhounds have tons of energy. I'm thinking you got lucky, as that's typically not a breed good to kennel up for 9 hours while away at work.
How long in the day would it be? Would they be crated/kenneled or would they be given reign of the house and/or yard?
Would be alone for 9 hours most days. I would let it have reign of the house. We don't have a fenced in yard at the moment, so it would be inside

we had 2 black labs for 10 years while wife and I both worked. Having 2 made it easier on them. However we have a fenced yard with a dog door into the garage so they were outside while we were not home.
edit - and when it was really hot or cold out, they were inside, not kennelled. Never had any issues except one who like to chew on the woodwork occasionally.

Greyhounds actually don't have tons of energy! They are couch potatoes that happen to run really fast. They are excellent dogs for apartments too.
Typically they don't bark much and don't smell bad (unlike my current Dachshund mix). Chill dogs most of the time. She'd run around the back yard for a bit and then back to chill mode
We have gotten lab mixes from a shelter. I think they are more calm than my brothers dogs who are purebred goldens.
I have a shelter westie-cairn terrier mix, and he's been a great free reign house dog. Excited to see us when we get home though, that's for sure. He didn't take long to train either.

Ours even loves to come grocery shopping with us, and will just ride around in the cart like a 95 pound baby.
