Per your first part, you are right and wrong. You can jam a receiver 5 yards from scrimmage is where you are right. You are wrong that it is just 5 yards, those are pro rules. In college you can be handsy until the ball is in the air no matter the distance.

So Cyclone offensive lineman Ben Bruns in depth analysis displays more in depth knowledge of the game than ref apologist @cycloneML.

It was definitely before a pass. His larger point was that among the things that could be called, unnecessary roughness was one of the things that made the least sense.

Not exactly sure.

Not getting in the middle, but I would even take BBs information over my own. He would know better than anyone.

He said the defensive illegal block or whatever was the worst of the day, but also that there's no way the correct call on the play we're discussing was actually unnecessary roughness and was very dubious that there should have been any penalty there. On the targeting he just pointed out how amazingly inconsistent it was like everybody else is.

It was actually refreshing to have listened to someone as a sideline reporter for 10-15 years...now just giving his unfiltered version of the truth as an expert. He admitted as much that he wouldn't have been able to tell the unfiltered truth about this game as a broadcaster, it's just not what they do even on the home team call.

John and Eric hold back a lot, even as much as they sometimes let their emotions be known. The national network guys basically don't even talk about 10% of what is going on to avoid any controversy, with a few obvious exceptions like Barkely on TNT who is no ISU fan but can give his quick "Iowa State got screwed" truth when they took Will Clyburn's 3 point play attempt off the board vs OhSt.

The call wasn't 'illegal contact' or anything like that, so it had to be the manner of contact itself not the area of the field it occurred in. Look up any definition of unnecessary roughness you want, and you won't find anything that fits the description of this play. It was a TERRIBLE call that came right on the heels of another TERRIBLE call. Add in the other bad calls and no calls on Baylor for worse infractions and it's understandable the reaction on this site and our coaches. I agree, move on to Kansas now as we've rehashed this a lot. But for anyone to say we are whiners or the team should have overcome all of this, they didn't watch the game and don't have a clue how thin the margins are. You can't say "well if you had played a perfect game you could have overcome all of the officiating incompetency, so move on". There has to be accountability.

Prior to the ball being thrown downfield contact with receivers is legal. You can knock them on their ass if the ball isn't in the air.

I'm not sure how well known this is and imo it should be.

I also feel like I've seen something called in a similar situation. Not unnecessary roughness per say, but some form of interference.

Agree. The ultimate goal of jamming a receiver is to knock them down. Hard for a receiver to catch a pass when they are laying on the ground. QB usually can’t even find them then. If that was blindside. The sack that ORien got, if you watch, he was violently blindside blocked on it. He got back up and got the sack. I’m not saying it should have been flagged, quite the opposite, it’s football. You expect to have a couple hits a game when you wonder if your bones are still fully intact after them.

I've only watched the 1st qtr so far. J. Brock's TD catch from Dekkers was probably an incomplete pass that was ruled a TD. In our favor. Didn't even go to review.
I can only guess since you did not explain, but you must be thinking Brock did not "complete the process of the catch" since the ball came loose after he was down.

However, he caught the ball, completed the catch and then continued running to the end zone. He took I think three steps before he went down. So at that point he had become a runner, he was not going to the ground as part of the catch. No different than if you caught a pass at the 20 and ran it in. In that case, once the ball touches the plane of the goal line, it's a touchdown. So, once Brock got over the goal line, his fumble was meaningless. As a runner, he had scored.

OPI, 3 targetings, and late hit out of bounds were not called against BU. I did not see Baylor holding, DPI, or false starts - they were the better coached team ( also no turnovers). ISU had 3 false starts on their home field. The defensive blocking below the waist was the worst call of the season. Not knowing the rules, I would flag roughness, but maybe it is allowed. There should be challenge flags used in B12 , including uncalled penalties. There were also a couple of ball spots that were unfavorable to ISU. It would be awesome if a team would be able to ban an official from their field if they show gross incompetence or bias. I believe ISU voted against a rule that added more game officials, which would have affected their livlihood. I still remember the taunting call from last year - so bad. In 2 games where the outcome is clear, and probably no B12 refs (Semo/Ohio), no officiating issues. In 2 games where outcome is close, with b12 refs, huge officiating issues (Iowa/Baylor).

No, I really don't know of a game where we had a series of 3-4 irrational calls so close together that swung games like those 3. Plenty of games where we got benefit of one or two close calls.

That's hardly "every game" but all of them were bizarre enough that just simple screwups are less likely than officials with an interest of some sort that could be as simple as strong personal bias.

Or total dip$hits like you who think analyzing any bad call is saying every game is fixed.

I actually can understand how the bad calls could've been made in our Michigan St elite 8 game and that one stings the most.
I think you need to go watch the K State game a few years ago to find 3-4 irrational calls so close together. This isn't our first time on the short end of that stick.

I don't understand how the on field officials missed the spearing on Brock but that happens. What I really don't understand is how the replay officials did not interrupt and review. Play was delayed due to Brock being injured so they had plenty of time. Incompetance on the field officials on this play is not in doubt but the people who need to be answering the "why not" are the replay officials.

From my understanding, the review officials are from the home conference, is this correct @brentblum ?

Do you honestly believe this game was fixed?

Fixed may be a slightly to strong term (perhaps not though), the outcome of the game or at a minimum the trajectory of the game was unduly impacted by calls that were not even good enough to be called questionable.
