Apple vs. Google

Couldn't the same theory apply to Hotmail and Yahoo? While they both still exist, they are from dominant anymore.

I think Gmail, when it came out, was different enough from Hotmail and Yahoo that they were very distinct products.

Plus google went on to offer other workspace products as well all for free. MS is just as of late adding those.

Google is completely dominant in maps and calendar compared to Apple. They also have a better photo sharing tool with Picasa/Google+. The wallet/passport piece was a nice add on to iOS 6 though.

Google is bigger than Apple for all of those, but my point was that Google's not so dominant relative to everyone else that they're the undisputed top dog. Do a search for "google maps market share" and you'll see what I mean. I love Google Calendar, but I imagine that MS Outlook is still king, and Apple has huge potential in that they can integrate their calendar into all of the other apps you use on their devices. Picasa, while great, still has a host of limitations and flaws (Flickr, Photobucket, etc. do too, for that matter).

Although who knows; Apple's had almost a decade to tout their web browser, and Safari is still one of the ********* products I have ever used.

Yeah they dont seem to care about Safari a whole lot. They probably figure they will leave the browser choice up to the user. Chrome works great. I honestly dont see Apple and Google competing a ton. Of course each wants to dominate the other in the phone market, but outside of that I would imagine its pretty cooperative.

Not an apple fan here. I bought an Ipad and wasn't that impressived to begin with and then a neighbor bought a Toshiba thrive and after checking it out I want to throw the Ipad away and get something usefull.

I have had quite a few droid phones and love them so maybe my opinion is skewed because I am used to the google phones. So take the opinion for what it's worth.

Yeah because Samsung is the only company who can make a screen. It is said that apple I working to become completely independent from Samsung before long.

Others can make them if they wanted to, but samsung sources a lot of screens for a lot of different companies (i remember as much because of supply issues to get my original HTC incredible being caused by a lack of available screens delivered by samsung)

And if Samsung is smart they will continue to offer them to Apple, but I think Apple in general is buying in to a bunch of start ups and competitors who they can help rise to the top. I cant find the article at the moment, but Apple is doing a good thing by helping to create more competition in the marketplace. Samsung has been kind of a ***** as of late and they used to be one of my favorite companies.

You serious Clark?

Apple has done their fair share of theft as well. Voice commands (siri), status bar pull downs, hell the maps program looked pretty familiar as well. I would love for Samsung to grow a pair and just stop selling Apple their chipsets. Apple is just ****** that their phones are a generation behind. The only thing that is being released in ios6 that isn't on android already is passport. But of coarse it is Google that's stealing from Apple.

This is hilarious. Google completely ripped off their Android design from the iPhone. Voice commands? Apple bought Siri which existed long before Google dreamed of using it. Tey also partnered with Nuance to incorporate that feature long before Google dreamed of it. As for Samsung...they know which side of the bread is buttered and they can't afford to drop Apple. If they did Apple would take their business to someone else and completely change the market. Finally...the iPhone is a generation behind? What in the world is this based on?

Great point. Companies today are finding ways to compete and collaborate at the same time. Sure makes for higher levels of innovation in some cases and puts the best products on the market.

Of course I should edit that to say phone and tablet market. But they both use the same OS's so it doesnt really matter.

If Apple is so bad, why are they dominating the market with iPhones and iPads?

Google and Apple will co-exist, just like Apple and Microsoft has for past 30 years.

Apple can't take over the market. Their **** is all too expensive to get a monopoly on it.

I love google products but I feel the chromeOS is an utter waste of resources. i like the idea, but why start another OS when in reality their work on android is much better. I happen to like what MS and Apple are doing by converging devices into a cross platform OS for some unity. And it could very well be I just dont know enough about ChromeOS, but from what Ive used so far its a big meh.

The lawsuits against various Android phones are a completely predictable move on the part of Apple. Awhile back in another thread, I posted some financial links regarding the US cell phone companies. For several months now, Wall Street has been telling US cell phone companies that their model of heavy subsidies for smart phones is not financially viable in the long term. The iPhone is the most heavily subsidized smart phone.

Several European cell companies have cut all subsidies for smart phones. In the European countries where this has happened, Android rules, and iPhone has minuscule market share (about 5%), because Apple has no low to mid-priced smart phones, while Android does. Likely, a similar thing would happen in the US if smart phone subsidies are cut.

Apple needs Android to be gone, so that there are no viable low-cost smart phone options should the US cell phone companies decide to cut subsidies. Apple is betting that the cell phone companies would rather pay subsidies to Apple for the iPhone than have large numbers of customers not buy/drop data plans because they can't afford smart phones. And it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see Microsoft supporting the Apple lawsuit behind the scenes, since with Android gone, the Windows phone would pick up some market share.

Until these lawsuits are settled, the cell phone companies probably won't make a decision on the subsidies, and Apple can keep stockpiling the subsidy cash.

Your lack of knowledge is astounding.

Voice commands? Google voice actions was around long before siri. Siri leapfrogged it (though personally i have no use for either) and google's project majel will probably leapfrog Siri.

As for 'completely ripped off android design', what a joke. Then again, you probably think a flat screen with a bunch of icons on it is an apple original (never mind that it existed long before in small-form in palm pilots or in large form on desktops\laptops for years)

Right now yes, but more and more people are affording it. Depends on the product honestly. Their new macbook pro is amazing but I sure as **** cant afford 2100 bucks at this time. Someday?...maybe. It appears their hardware lasts longer. There are apple products from years ago that still retain a ton of value. Like Harley motorcycles.

The majority of the population however will never be able to afford a $1,500 MacBook versus a $400 el cheapo laptop.

I see Apple filling a niche market (albeit a large one), not taking over completely.

That depends if they are actually subsidies to the degree they claim they are. Look at the Galaxy Nexus for example. On verizon, if you want to buy it 'unsubsidized' it will cost you $650. This makes it look like theyre offering a $300-400+ subsidy on the product. However, you can go to google's site and get an almost identical GSM nexus (only slight modifications) for $399. The question is, what is VZW (and other carriers) actually paying suppliers for phones? It wouldnt surprise me if that gap is bigger for the iphone than other phones, but im not necessarily sure that the subsidy model is dead.
