I think it should have been left to the bars. The good thing is that it's made a lot of bars create some nice patios. Although next you'll have people complain about people smoking outside.

Can we get an official list of the thousands of businesses that had to close due to lost revenue due to the smoking ban? That's what a lot of Iowans were predicting when it was proposed even though it worked great in other states.

And how would you do that? Do you want a list of bars that have went out of business in the last few years in Iowa. I'm sure it's a few.

To be honest, I doubt that the smoking ban itself put a lot of them out of business but if they we're barely profitable, something like the ban may have been the final straw.

For me it's not about the smoking or the loss of business. It's just another example of big brother getting involved in something they shouldn't. At the same time you notice that the casino still allows smoking. If the majority of adults still smoked this would have never happened.

In principle, i dont like it because it seems an overreach of government.

In practice though, i dont miss going to a bar and having everything i wore smelling like smoke.

I didnt like that there was an exemption given for casinos (that rake in big $$ for the state). Hypocritical as hell.

Did Otis Campbell's in West Burlington shut down due to the law? I seem to remember the owner fighting hard against the law.

I don't mind the law for restaurants and bars, not a fan of no smoking in tailgating lots, or it being illegal to smoke in my cars (company owned vehicles) No one has tried to tell me not to smoke in either of my trucks so far. As long as it continues that way I don't mind.

Thing of it is all the smokers I know are still for it. Even smokers dont like the smell of smoke. I know that when I drink and smoke that I am more than happy to stand outside. The thought of smoking inside is rediculous. Why should everyone else have to stand the smell of my bad habit? The thought of smokers being upset they have to go outside is redic.

I do remember within a few days after the smoking ban, downtown by CABCO some *** hat freaked out on us because we were smoking in the sidewalk...whatever.

i think a private business owner should be allowed to chose whether their establishment is smoking or non smoking.

although, being a non smoker, I don't mind my clothes not smelling terrible after a night out at the bar
