Are we far enough along to evaluate Yancy McKnight?

Granted it shouldn't happen, but UNI actually has some really cool stuff going on in their S&C department and also in their Athletic Training/Athlete Health department. The strength programs were really designed to take these guys that are smaller and might have been passed over by schools like ISU and Iowa, and give them some sort of advantage over those players. In many cases, this is speed. I might be smaller, but if I use correct technique and I hit you first because I'm faster, I'm going to win even if your muscles are bigger.
What happens if you fall down and miss the runner which happened a lot last week?

And that's happened in other seasons as well.

I don't know the answer on this guy, but it's certainly a fair question to ask.

Worst part is we are about to see what just how bad the S&C program is on Saturday. If they run for 400-500 yards on us, there should leave little doubt how good Yancy is, even though everyone can seemingly point the finger at him already due to the Iowa game, UNI game, so on and so on.

The number of MCL issues we seem to have is fairly indicative that our leg workouts aren't building up the muscles in the upper and lower leg together properly so that knee ligaments aren't destroyed.

I would bet 1% of the folks on this board are remotely qualified to have an opinion about this. I know I sure as hell have no way to know if he's doing a good job or not.

Offensive production, defensive lapses, et al, sure you can see the end result and assess a lot to the coaching. But strength training? Injuries can't be a good measurement of that. I have no idea what would be.

Boy, if being qualified to have an opinion on things is a requirement to post this website is going to get awful quiet.

I had an Oklahoma State fan ask me Saturday after the game if Iowa State even used the facilities.

I really didnt know how to answer, he said it was as nice of a facility that he had seen, but it was apparent it wasnt being used properly.
So he insinuated our players were weinies? Yet we are running faster this year due to the treadmills.

I would evaluate a S&C coach based how how tough physically the players are. We have been abused up front by guys half our players weight, telling me pound for pound even UNI has stronger men, physically, up front.

There is such a thing as tough and then there is aggressive or mentally tough. Unfortunately it's hard to teach some kids to be aggressive, some either have it or they don't. It's easy for a kid to dominate in high school because he's a mammoth compared to the other kids on the field. When they get to college they are all going to be your size or bigger.

So now it comes down to technique and who wants it more. I'm not sure how much has changed when Coach K came in, but there could be some different techniques or calls that might be affecting our play. Plus, the injuries and we are what we are.

If it was me I would have put the Godfather of the pistol at OC and had him calling the plays.

I guess. He said it had been awhile since he saw Oklahoma State manhadle people up front like that and create such huge holes, thats where the conversation began.

Physicality is as much coaching as training.

Your point is correct. But you see too many of these young guys out there thinking. They are not reacting. That leads to tentative football, and more importantly, weak football.

My sense tells me it's a symptom of youth and inexperience. We've got a bunch of players who are playing a lot of snaps a year earlier than they would otherwise. In the trenches that makes a big difference. Not much can replace time in the weightroom and at the training table, and reps learning how to play a position. Which is why our handling of guys like Irving and Morrissey are such a kluge. No redshirts for either of them - what a fustercluck. Morrissey was a 19-year old junior for crying out loud. Same with Irving I think, at the start of the year. Coe doesn't get a redshirt to learn what he's doing because we've not nobody.

Injuries, like on the OL, happen and no one can predict it. Mostly it looks like a team relying too heavily on young/inexperienced guys in the trenches.

Then you are saying bad recruiting is the probable answer to our current pickle of a problem, with classes being ranked lower by Rivals and people leaving the program? Do we have good recruiters outside of CPR?

Yea, but it pales in comparison to the bigger schools.

No it doesn't.

I don't think teaching gap control is the job of the S&C coach.

Wrong, plain and simple. If you were talking about 15 year old girls playing soccer then you are right. A good amount of strengthening and work on lower extremity mechanics can prevent a lot of injuries. But football is a contact sport, it's nearly impossible to eliminate contact knee injuries unless you start playing with flags.
