“There is an offensive lineman here called Wendell Taiese (Cyclone starting guard),†Olson said. “He’s about 6-5, 350 pounds and he moves, I don’t know how to describe it, he moves really well. That’s probably the first time I’ve seen a human being up close that is that huge, and moves as well as he does and is as powerful as he is. That’s a Division I athlete right there, that’s a guy that has the potential to make a lot of money playing this game someday.â€

I'm feeling cynical today so I will be the one to post this. Is a Grad Asst from a Div III school the best we could do? Are we giving our D1 players in the B12 the best in-game we can provide them by offering guidance from someone in DIII? And it was a hire through a friend and former contact of CPR, which makes it feel even more... slimy. Maybe my mood will change as the day goes on, but right now this just seems... why?

He's a coach, not a player. There's no reason to suspect a guy can't be a great coach just because they didn't play D-I ball. The skillsets for coaching and playing are two completely separate things. Hell, we just hired a basketball coach who played one year of D-II ball and then was a student manager.

I'm not saying he is or isn't going ot be a good coach. I'm just saying you can't use the fact his background is D-III as an indicator for his coaching abilities.

I assume that you did not approve when Coach Hoiberg hired Charlie Henry (who was from a "small college" background) ?

Not a big deal at all either way. First of all, GA's are so low on the totem pole anyway. Its basically a glorified manager position. Being one is really a resume builder and that's it.
Second- GA is not really something that coaches advertise or search for. It is really a position you get by knowing someone.
Third- In the timeline of a college coach working his way up to making a livable wage, this is around the third step. Usually preceeded by a GA job at a lower level school and then being a position coach at a lower level school. Then after being a GA it usually opens up coordinator jobs at small schools or position jobs at bigger ones

Wow!!!!!!! He's a Grad Assistant Coach who cares where he comes from. His role is doing grunt work for the real coaches and holding up cards with plays on them so the scout team knows what plays to run.

He played for Wisconsin-Whitewater . . . had two losses as a player . . . probably both to Mount Union in Division III national championship games . . . he knows a little bit about discipline and skill on the o-line.
