Both, he needs his own Lutz (to learn how to run a program) & he needs a good recruiter to take his spot. Personally, I would like to have Fizer on board. Isn't he a preacher/mister of some sort? It would be an easy sell to kids & their parents. ISU legend, NBA experience, knows weight/conditioning, a overall good person (or so it seems on twitter), & is extremely loyal to ISU. It would also give him an opportunity to get his degree so we can Hang 5.

Fizer doesn't qualify , imo. Doesn't have the 'connections' to AAU programs and others. Definitely doesn't have the coaching background. Other than Fizer being a ISU alum, former player, and appreciated supporter, I don't think he's ever been under consideration here.

I think any assistant coach must have a college degree, so that might exclude a guy like Fizer. I could much easier see former players like Bryan Petersen or Scott Christopherson on a staff TJ put together.

Sure TJ could use an experienced coach on his staff, heck even Bill Self would be wise to hire an experienced coach. It's a bit silly to think TJ needs a coach knowledgable in X's & O's- he' been on McDermott, Hoiberg and Romar's staffs the last 10 years. I think he has learned something.

so TJ is a big hire? not

Nope, he's not. Never been a head coach before. Didn't get selected for the Drake job and the only interested D1 schools were Northern Kentucky and Wisconsin-Green Bay. He will make a decent head coach one day, but right now at ISU is not that time.

Here nor there
Depends if they keep Mann.
He needs both to buy recruits via well connected recruiters, as well as an ex-HC, ideally one with a fairly big-name. Get that plus hopefully a surprise transfer/late pickup and we are rolling.

I noticed Tj was following Michael porter, a Missouri womens asst coach on Twitter. Didn't think anything of it until I also noticed that his son Michael porter jr is the number 2 recruit in the 17 class per 247. I'm sure it's all a coincidence, I'm just saying that I noticed.

We would need an assistant. It would be a step up for him.

I saw that too but didn't realize he was the prospects dad, that's insteresting. He also recently followed the HC at Norfolk State, FWIW.

Who or what type of coach should he bring as an assistant?

X & O's guy or a top recruiter?

I tend to fall on the side of a top level recruiter. We have so many scholly's and not a lot of time.
I have been a proponent of a guy from a top AAU program, then I read the Stackhouse story and him coaching US Adidas U18 team over in Europe. All of the kids on that team are top 100 guys.

I think next years team is probably a bit on cruise control, and TJ does understand the system well enough and probably would not want to make a lot of changes.

Don't expect a known commodity, what proven coach would gamble his career on someone who is not known nor can provide evidence of success?

I mentioned this in another thread before, but as far as I know I don't think Herb Sendek has been hired anywhere since he was let go at Arizona State after the season. IMO, he would be a perfect fit for that Bobby Lutz type of role, if TJ gets the nod.

Honest question: Would it be?

Not sure who he's recruited outside of Morris, and I thought he was the defense guy. Seems like a good guy but seems replaceable.
Has more experience then Otz and has actually been a head coach before. would be good to have someone that Otz can lean on.
