Awesome win, but...

I would never purposely miss up only 2 points unless it was under 1 second. It's conceivable to lose on a 3/4 shot and people would have lost their minds at Prohm had that happened.

Why should I do something else? I'm on a thread discussing this very topic, which I have an interest in. If you, on the other hand, do not wish to discuss it, then feel free to go to another thread or do something with your wife.

Haha, lighten up man, Im not saying you shouldnt discuss it, I just think after a huge win like that we can find more productive things to post about. I'm ready to watch some basketball this afternoon so I'll be doing something else shortly.

Why is this still a thread? It's as simple as this: miss the free throw on purpose - worst case scenario we LOSE on a full court heave. Make the free throw to go up 3 - worst case scenario, other team makes a still extremely tough shot and we go to overtime. The odds are not with the opposing team either way, but why in the hell would you even risk losing? Show me one basketball coach that has this line of thinking

Coach K did exactly this in the national title game against Butler in 2010 and had 3.6 seconds on the clock. Here is at least one example

A real Cyclone would have been worried about going up 3, Baylor heaving a full-court shot for the tie and getting fouled, then making the and-1 for the win. The crazy part would be when the foul would have actually been committed by Baylor though, but called on the Clones.

Maybe Prohm's strategy was to tell Monte to make the FT thinking he would likely miss......like he did on so many other end of game FT's.

We win a game over a Top 10 team and some knucklehead posts how we could have won "better". The hint of a negative thread brings out the roaches (clonedude) who have become increasingly silent during the winning streak.

It makes for a whole bunch of stupid. But, then again here I am reading it to remind myself that I share my Cyclone fandom with a few folks that are not the brightest folks around...

This thread was started as a discussion of how we handled the last few possessions. Nobody is required to come on this thread and discuss it.

Some of us do like discussing these situations. Today you can't hardly argue with what Prohm did because we won the game, but that doesn't necessarily mean it was the decision that gave us the "best" chance of winning.

I'm not really upset with what we did, I just more love having discussions about it because I know there are a lot of people out there a LOT smarter than me regarding the game of basketball and I want to learn everything I can.

If people don't want to discuss it, they are free to go to another thread that isn't about this topic.

I respect clonedude's position on this because it would have been the same whether Baylor made that 3 and went on to win in OT or not.

On the other hand, the "we won, get over it" crowd would be singing a much different tune if another outcome happened.

The Butler shot rimmed out. Duke got lucky. They could have easily lost.

That is your comparison? Not even remotely the same situation. Butler got the ball across half court because they had 3.6 secs left. If it were the same situation as ours, Butler would have gotten a 75 foot baseball throw heave instead of an actual basketball shot from less than half court. C'mon. Not comparable.

And, if we're going to go by the reasoning many on here are giving, Coach K 100% made the right call, not even debatable, because they won the game.

I would not have missed the FT on purpose in the Duke situation.... too much time left for my liking.

The original post just stated that no coach would think this way. I just provided the article of one of the best coaches ever doing this in the highest profile game and explaining why. You can call it lucky or good coaching but it does happen.

In yesterday's situation I agree of missing the shot. I just shared the link of Coach K thought process in the situation. With 1.4 seconds left on the clock yesterday was even better. By the time you grab a rebound, their is minimal chance of a good shot let alone going in.

Have no problem discussing it at all. Find it funny that Coach K implemented the missed FT strategy against Butler and was absolutely lucky that Duke did not lose that game. Making the FT to go up by 3 is not playing to lose. You have put yourself in the position to absolutely NOT lose. Coach K put his team in a position for Duke to possibly lose in regulation. And that Butler shot rimmed out. Imagine the reaction if Butler made it. It could have easily happened. Coach K was actually foolish.

Iowa State won the game. So Prohm made the right call. We Won.

I agree with you. In that situation I don't think Coach K did the right thing IMO. Completely different situation than what we were in yesterday though. Not even comparable. 3.6 secs vs. 1.4 secs is a night and day difference in basketball.

Uhhh..... wait a second.... but you just said that Coach K was foolish for his decision, but yet his decision won him a National Championship. So which is it?

See, you yourself prove that just because you won doesn't mean it was the "correct" decision.

I do think Coach K got a little lucky as you are correct Haywood dang near made it. I also think there is a time to miss depending on how what is left on the clock. That is where an analytics guy could figure out what that time could be. I am guessing somewhere between 1.5 and 2 seconds it might be a higher percentage for winning taking all factors into account.

Yeah, that's kind of what I'm trying to argue. It was a safe choice. Football analogy time again...it's like when Belichick went for it on 4th and 2 on his own 30. The safe choice would have been to punt, but Belichick knew going for it gave his team the best chance to win. It didn't work out, but over the (very long) that kind of decision making would get his team more wins.

You were the one that stated since Duke won the game versus Butler that Coach K made the right call. "Not even debatable". According to you.

I am just pointing out that the Cyclones won. Since we Won, Prohm made the right call. "Not even debatable".

And Baylor did not even hit the rim.

OMG.... you need a reading comprehension lesson Stormin'. Here is my statement that you are referring to....

"And, if we're going to go by the reasoning many on here are giving, Coach K 100% made the right call, not even debatable, because they won the game."

I specifically said that by using the "reasoning many on here are giving", which means that isn't what I believe. I specifically have stated that Coach K made a poor decision because 3.6 secs is too much time IMO.

1.4 seconds left. If we'd missed the free throw they wouldn't have had a chance at a last second shot. We won, but we risked OT. If Monte had intentionally missed we would have won with less risk.

No, we would have risked losing in regulation, which was still a very real possibility.
