Well, that interview was a whole lot of nothin'

But... would he have to "sit" for two years if he went to NU? Or just sit a year and lose a year? He'd play in 2010, right?

I ask because he said the former.

Good questions that were answered with non-answers.

Sounds like Bill Clinton on the stand. It depends on what the definition of "is is".

I'd almost guarantee PB's daddy had to approve any question that Dave asked PB.

I think you may be right. There were quite a few easy follow up questions that could have been asked. Really glad I just spent a few minutes watching that.......

Boy his eyes lit up when he heard the word Nebraska.

Obviously he doesn't know the definition of quitting.

Just listened to the video of the interview from WOI-TV. Disappointed in the whole matter. PB isn't reaching "his" maximum potential, he says. He says, ".. I wanna do great" ..."be the best I can be." Good ideas for him. He is not the lone ranger here. There is a college team here folks, not an individual. I think if he would have stayed and worked hard with the team, he may have reached his potential. We will never know now! I heard a whole lot of "me" in this interview. Most of all, wasting Chizik's time was the worst statement a team player could ever say. Well, may you find your pot of gold PB. Good-bye! Let's get on with the remaining games and GO CYCLONES!!!

I heard some quotes last night and the one where he stated he did everything Gene asked him to do, being an ambassador, etc...this really pissed me off...why?

What it shows it Coach Chizic thought of Bates as a leader, someone he trusted recruits with, again.....a leader!! Then he up and quits on his teammates and coaches midseason. This equals lack of character!!!

I wish I never had heard that interview. Most of us would've had no problem with Bates leaving at the end of the season, but midyear??? What kind of teammate, friend is that? Not much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Goodluck Phillip, I hope when I'm in Omaha in the future I don't run into you working at 7/11 on Ames Ave.

I'll be happy when he finally picks a school, ala Wesley Johnson finally choosing Syracuse.

That was what finally got everybody to stop talking about a guy no longer with the team.....

I think, with it being clear that Arnaud was clearly going to win the QB battle, most of us expected that he was going to transfer out at the end of the year. And although it wouldn't have made us very happy, we would all be understanding as Bates had made it clear from day 1 that he wanted to be QB.

What just ticks us fans off, though, is not just the leaving in the middle of the year but in the way he did it. Having his dad do the quitting for him. Calling the AD instead of the coach. Throwing the coach and the administration under the bus by saying he didn't get a fair chance when in truth he got chance after chance early in practice and against the nonconference portion of our schedule and proved to be ineffective time and time again.

FYI, Gene Smith would have never taken a call from a parent that his son was going to quit. He would have directed them to the coach.

This is a great post. I am not surprised that the Bates clan did not want to talk to Chizik but I am surprised that Pollard took the call and did not direct them to Chizik on this matter. I am a disappointed if that (Pollard directing them to discuss it with Chizik) did not happen and I would bet that Chizik is too.

Do we know JP took the call?

Last I heard (and I've heard 3 things), Sr called the athletic department. That doesn't necessarily mean JP.

Even so, we don't necessarily know JP (or whomever) knew the context of the call. We could look at it as a good thing that the Ath Dir takes calls from the family of an athlete in his charge.

(here I will point you at the u of i and kf and gb stating they didn't want to be involved in the meeting with the father of the victim)

I think it may have been more of a surprise face to face with Pollard.

I'm guessing he never talked to Chizik cuz if he had he would have heard some things that he did not want to hear.

My take home from the interview is that he quit midseason because it was best for HIM. It gives HIM more time to evaluate options.

Too bad college football does not have 8 man ball. That would give him less teamates to not consider when he makes a decision. I'm sure Tiller is thrilled that Bates' decision could easily cost him a year at the helm. At some poin tthis season Austin will get his bell rung or tweak an ankle and then Chizik will have a huge decision to make.

The KXNO report that cuts in says that Bates' high school coach mentioned the following schools.

UNI
Ohio
Southern Illinois
Central Michigan
and South Dakota State.

I hate to ask, but do you all really think there are "no hard feelings" on the part of the coaching staff? I understand they need to just forget about it and make the team move on, but from the press release it sounded like there may be disappointment.

I bet Sr. was right behind Bates during the interview just off camera...

Maybe JP told them to talk to Chizik. Then he told Chizik they called and Chizik said..screw him, give him, his release if he doesn't want to be hear.

Those actually sound like a reasonable list of schools that he might expect to play QB at and 'realize his full potential'.

UNI would be interesting for sure.

I'm sure if PB would of called Chizik, Chizik would of talked him out of it. That's probably why he had his dad call Polord so it was different.

If he had called:

PB: "I want to take a stay of my backup qb position, Coach."

Gene, "You want to do what? Leave the team?"

PB, " I just need a break. My heart is not in it as a backup.":cute:

Gene, " Well, we need you in Texas on Saturday. You are the Man."

PB, "This Man wants a break. I need some downtime.":dull:

Gene, "We have a lot of recruits coming in and the nebby game is a week away. Don't you want to show Pelini what you got?"

PB, " I need to call my Dad."

Gene, "If you go Big 12, it will be 2 years forever lost. You sure?"

PB, " I just decided over coffee and I have have issues with my position."

Gene, "Drop me your paperwork off in an hour. Hey, Jerome?" :daydreaming:

Whenever you start a sentence with "to be honest..." You know whatever follows is a complete lie.
