No, this would be like Campbell leaving ISU go to EIU, not only did TT lose their coach, they lost him to their instate rival.

Things like that shake a fan base to its core, and make them question why they are supporting the school. When Gable left ISU for EIU, ISU was one of the big dogs in the sport, no one knew Gable would turn their program around and become a legend.
Beard is a well known commodity, and he didn't leave for the NBA like the mayor but to your hated rival.
Honestly it’s even worse than that somehow, considering they’re in the same conference. Not that I feel particularly bad for them, but that is an absolute crushing blow to Tech

Anyone get the feeling that Beard at Texas won't be as great as most people think? To me the problems at Texas (football and basketball) are much deeper than their head coaches.
He might be the right personality type to make it work there with the boosters and media honestly.

Texas’ rival is OU, not TTU. Everyone in Texas is not even their little brother. They are like their 2nd cousin. A&M used to be a rival but now they gone.

While their coaching style is different, their style of play is kind of similar to what Shaka had at VCU. I agree I think the issues with that athletic department are pretty pervasive and the type of kid you get doesn't always lend to the style of play he prefers.

Beard is undeniably a great coach, but...

-- He achieved a ton with the Culver team, but Culver kind of fell into his lap. He's come back down to Earth since then. Not saying merely being good is not an accomplishment in Lubbock, but pump the brakes.

-- The institutional rot at Texas is deep. Athletes are entitled. The Athletics Department is flabby and clueless. I don't think Sarkisian is really the type to instill much of a working-class attitude from the top down.

-- Texas boosters are going to Texas booster. I am sue the whisper campaign has already started.

-- They ran off Rick Barnes, who I would say is at least as good of a coach as Beard.

I hope he is ready. Austin has chewed up and spit out a lot of good coaches the past 15 years.

It's his alma mater, and I'm assuming he'll be paid at the minimum the same (Tech was paying him 6+mil). He might be a little slimy, but I don't see this particular move as such. Lubbock was a nice place for him to prove himself as a P6 coach and he knocked it out of the park and now has what is potentially a dream job for him.

Some of the talk over the last week has been about the money. Not that Texas didn't have it, but rather the optics of having to pay the basketball coach more than the football coach. So they either got over that or Beard didn't get much of a raise in the move.

I agree. Isn't Beard kind of a hardass? How well will that work with the typical pampered 4-5 star recruits they have? Wasn't Shaka a tough nosed guy in a similar vein, and that didn't work (although I think Shaka was figuring it out and adjusting his style).

Beard may very well create a dynasty, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if it sputtered and didn't really work. Feels to me more like a Calipari type is needed there, or an ex-NBA guy used to dealing with egos.

This actually reminds me of the Hoiberg situation here, at least from a fan perspective.

As a fan I felt like he could have developed a legacy like Coach K at Iowa State. Once he took the job I had a gut feeling the program was doomed that same day and it all came to fruition.

Theyll probably be in the exact situation as Iowa St went through. Once in a lifetime coach leaves, another guy comes in and is able to sustain for a little bit, but once the players filter out its right back to the bottom and looking for another coach in 5 years.

This is one of my favorite sentences ever anywhere.

Well, he is an alumni of Texas-Austin and was a student manager there. It is not like he is going to a random program. And I am sure he is making major bank with the move too.
