wow. that story (and the reader comments) is all kinds of messed up. sounds like one kid is still in crtitical condition (hit in the head by something ... pipe or bat depending whos talking)
makes berryman seem like a saint.
Never trust the veracity of the reader comments on the Rag's website. :no6xn: I suspect that whoever is writing these stories about the beatings suffered by the alleged hit-and-runner drivers either 1) has no idea what they're talking about, or 2) is using the reader comments to give a distorted version of the story that makes their friends look like the innocent victims of a savage unprovoked attack.
I find it interesting that there have been no follow-up stories in the Register since this initial one ran on Saturday. If the situation was as dire and as explosive as the reader comments indicate, I think the Register would be all over it. I'm no fan of the Rag, which is frequently guilty of sloppy and lazy journalism, in my opinion. But one thing I'm certain of is that the Register would be trying hard to scoop the rest of the local media if they thought there was more to the story. I mean, if the reader comments are correct, we have two teenagers fighting for their lives after a brutal beating and a Des Moines football fingered as one of the attackers. That's front page news! If the story is as big as the reader comments say, why have no other media outlets besides the Register reported on this?
The whole thing is bizarre, and I suspect we will see a follow-up story in the next few days. For Jordan Bernstine's sake, I hope the version of the story in the reader comments isn't accurate. If it is, well, I think the Hawkeyes might have lost some depth in their secondary for the upcoming football season.
