For breakfast or lunch I highly recommend Perk Up Cafe at 70th and Douglas in Urbandale. Great food, very reasonably priced. For dinner Flying Mango or the original Gino's.

Been a while since I have been to these places but my favorites used to be...
Latin King
Christopher's
Sam and Gabes
Skips
J. Benjamin's
Club Car

That is a good list to start...

Not a "place" to eat but Thelma's Ice Cream Sandwiches that you can get at the Farmer's Market or at Hy-Vees and Gateway Market are really good. They even have a "spicy" Ice Cream sandwich. The owner is also an ISU alum.

Gateway Market is a hidden gem in itself I guess as well.

Gateway Market was going to be my choice as well. Really great lunches. I highly recommend the Lime Cilantro Chicken Salad and the fish tacos. They used to have a shrimp po'boy that was incredible. It comes back occasionally as a lunch special. The one thing I love about Gateway is that every time I order something it is a little bit different.

These are my Des Moines faves

Oh snap, The Wedgie. A guilty pleasure of mine during my adolescence and college years in late 80's-early 90's when cash was tight. It only cost about 3 or 4 bucks or so; about 1/2 the price of a pizza and when those toppings melded in that sealed folded pizza crust...mmmm such deliciousness..

Back then the Drake area was a nice little pizza hub back in the day- Paul Revere's, Pizza Hut, Dominoes, Home Run/Team Pizza, and Felix and Oscars (their Chicago style pizza is better than many of the revered pie joints in Chicago).

Just put on 10lbs reading this thread..

Went to a place of the beaten path tonight: Sonny's pizza in Saylor. Small place, very good pies.

We ate at the Waveland Cafe for breakfast this morning. The coffee cake heated up with frosting was spectacular!

Someone's PMS'ing. The OP just moved here so I doubt he knows about a lot of the places mentioned as he listed the Clipper under hidden gem.

He also had a question asking what are your favorite places so get your panties out of a wad.

Where is YOUR favorite place to go to get your panties out of a wad?

Daytonas wings and pizza. The place is a **** hole with a crappy racing motif. But the food is greAt, a free keg friday night, and usually fun drinking games during football games.

I lived right by it and avoided it because it looked like a **** hole. Now I'm curious.

I dislike going to places where the waitresses have "uniforms" though.

Is the South Union Cafe still open in downtown DSM? I remember they had kick *** bread. Fill up a sack and take it back to the work crew. I want to say it was on Locust by a flower shop, but it's been quite some time.

Also hiding in plain view is Tasty Mother Effing Tacos!!!!

South Union is still there - and you can pick up their breads around town at various places - or used to. Foccacia is awesome.

Had Tasty Taco's last night. Pretty good, but my wife loves it.

Had cool Basil last week. Used to like that place. Last couple times has been awful. Last meal in particular. Take out - got there early. Food was cold, hair in one of the rices, wouldn't do anything on the bill. They're done in my book.

Man, I haven't gotten out nearly enough since I moved to Des Moines.

No ****. I've stuck mainly to chain restaurants (I love Chipotle to death), and I've had Wig and Pen's pizza once (I'd eat there way more if I could afford it). The rest of my eating out has been mainly Casey's pizza and Jimmy John's for lunch.

Went to Tasty Tacos tonite ordered 1regular taco 1 steak taco. I ended up with 2 reg. tacos. I sort of liked the puffy shells but I thought the tacos were pretty bland. What do people usually order that makes this place so popular?
