Inspired by a Bball thread....Who was the greatest college football player (at their pos.) to ever play for ISU. I go Troy Davis. He was a dominate college back. Your thoughts?

Hard to argue against Troy Davis.

If the last half of '02 hadn't gone haywire, Seneca would be a viable challenger. He still qualifies for the Most Electrifying Top 5.

This is giving short-shrift to a lot of great candidates from pre-1985. (One post mentioned Crutchfield — before he became an easily-keyed-on threat in a one-dimensional offense, he was monstrous).

Helpful word nudge: you meant "dominant," not dominate. :v_SPIN:

Karl Nelson was a stud. Also, Mike Stensrud was pretty tough.

As far as skill position players, I think George Amundson was a great choice. I would offer the name Dexter Green as one for consideration.

Way up there
I'd say Troy Davis easily gets the nod, he accomplished something that no one will likely do at ISU again. This got me to thinking about how Jason Berryman would have figured into this discussion had he not had his off the field issues. He was the biggest impact defensive player we've had in a long time.

Berryman. Due only to the fact that I spent an entire afternoon tearing apart my house with him looking for a set of gold teeth that he supposedly lost at a party we had thrown the night before.

How do you lose your "teeth" and not notice it when it happens.

I have to agree with your selection of Troy Davis. However, Karl Nelson, Bruce Reimers, Mike Stensrud, Matt Blair would all make great candidates. If you included their pro careers in the assessment, one of those guys would be the choice. Probably Reimers, owing to his multiple yeras as an all -pro.

Troy Davis finished in the top 5 for the Heisman twice...5th in 1995 and 2nd in 1996 (the year that he won 3 of the 4 regions but got destroyed by Wuerffel in the Southeast).

The list of players to finish in the top 5 for 2+ years is pretty brief.

By far Matt Blair

No question about it. If you had the number one pick of all players who have worn an Iowa State uniform to build a team around, it would have to be Matt Blair. For all of the Troy fans and for as good as he was, he could be neutralized by some of the better teams that he played. Not the case with Blair - he was always a force on the field.
