Sub City hasn't been the same since Johnson's Bakery closed.

Their bread went from 'out of this world' to decidedly meh overnight.

A Taste of Italy!!

I think it's considered Clive. Right between Clive and Windsor Heights on University.

Only open for lunch, and extremely busy @ noon.

Everything is good there, but the Italian Beef cannot be beat.
Every Christmas Eve we buy 5lbs of the Italian Beef from them. We slow cook it and serve with their cheeses, peppercini's, hot peppers and stellar hoagies. It is a tradition we started when I grew up in the burb's of Chicago and continue to this day now in Iowa(having Italian Beef hoagies).

I think they're closed but man, there used to be a place called Noodle Zoo in West Des Moines area and they had hands down the best parmesan turkey grilled sandwich I've ever had.

I liked Planet Sub in Johnston. RIP

I really don't get why every single thing fails over in that area. Village Inn, Burger King, Okoboji Grill, Planet Sub, some sports bar that I can't remember the name, etc.. I'm sure the movie theater is next in line. I get why Price Chopper and American failed. Of course the one place I don't like, Texas Roadhouse, does a ton of business.

Seemed like it was always busy when I would go there for lunch. Pandemic casualty maybe?

Agree that it's weird not many places have staying power over there. At least ShortE's is still there.

(fwiw I only work in Johnston, don't live there)

ShortE's seems to have limited days/hours. They are pretty good, I wish they had a better location.

Too close to JC now. Back in the day when Wynnsong opened that area was a spot. No reason to go near there if you don’t live around there.

5 Borough Bagels out in WDM/Clive is also amazing. New York style bagels and they mix their own cream cheeses. Their meats are all awesome too.

When my daughter was born down the street we had their bagel sandwiches just about every day during our stay.

Johnston kinda has this sleepy bedroom town feel to it. Like the city shuts down at 5:30 pm every day. I've lived/worked in Johnston for 15 years, and it's always felt that way to me.

I think people want to go outside of their town to "do" anything.

This sounds like a front for an illegal business. I could swear I have heard this story before, sometime during the golden area of gangsters.

Sandwich in the front, handy's in the back.
