The core of Texas' team are finally upperclassmen and they add the #1 recruit in the nation. I don't see them Finishing worse than 3rd in the Big 12. Most likely 1 or 2.
I don't think anyone is guaranteeing that they will be a Top 2 finisher. No more thought from a reporter goes into it than this: Texas finished tied for third, returns all their players and add some excellent recruits. Barnes has only been out of the Top 3 in the Big 12 in 5 of his 16 years at Texas. That's not exactly "historically inconsistent".Yea, that would be tough. It just seems like their expectations are built on this shaky foundation of "returning core that possibly just overachieved last season" + "1-and-done freshman" + "historically inconsistent coach" = guaranteed top 2 finish. What?
Not really. they have a solid team and Barnes has almost always placed in the Top 3 of the conference when they had a solid team.I know it's only August, but does anyone else think it's setting up perfectly for Texas to have an overhyped, disappointing season?

I give this a .0001% chance of happening in the next 50 years. We couldn't even get David Ubben to visit Ames, let alone Gameday.
Just remember that 10 years ago, Alabama football was 6-6 following an even more terrible 4-9 season 11 years ago. Things change. You realize we were decently close to getting it 2 years ago against Texas Tech? I'd say we have like a 10 percent chance to get it once in the next 10 years.

I vaguely remember this being discussed on Cyclone Fanatic, but I doubt it was really realistic. 3-0 Texas Tech @ 3-0 Iowa State without much of an interesting slate nationwide that week meant people here thought GameDay might pick us. But neither team was even ranked at that time.
I think it gained steam because we were the only AQ matchup of undefeated schools. Or something like that. There were never any hints from anywhere else.
Going back to look here: http://espn.go.com/college-football/schedule/_/year/2012/week/5
It looks that isn't true. For example, the wildly entertaining 70-63 game between Baylor and West Virginia had two undefeated and ranked teams in it.
Wallen mentioned that he thought Michigan State got it - looking at them, they had a loss to Notre Dame, but were ranked, and they were hosting an undefeated and ranked Ohio State team that weekend.
So I have no idea why anyone thought Tech-ISU stood a chance at Gameday that weekend, but I do remember it getting mentioned on here at least a couple of times.
It was a pretty hyped season for ISU, and with the 3-0 start, kool-aid drinkers on here thought we had a good chance. I don't recall there ever being anything from ESPN that even hinted at the possibility. It was all CF hype/rumor.
Not with Texas vs OUNow that I am looking at the 2012 schedule, if ISU had managed to beat Texas Tech that week, there's a chance that we could have hosted Gameday two weeks later.
After the Tech game, we went to TCU and won there. Had we beaten Tech as well, we would have been 5-0 going into the Kansas State game at Jack Trice.
K-State at that time was also 5-0 and ranked #6 in the nation.
Just saying... ESPN could have hyped Farmageddon all week.
It got traction because it was one of the four they were choosing from. Like I said Michigan state ended up getting it against Ohio State. We weren't more than a pipe dream to get it but we were mentioned with it. I brought that up because someone said we had a .0001 chance of getting it in the next 50 years, which is a ridicoilous statement.
