I mean, the letter was fair enough but what's the point of doing this publicly? Can't imagine this couldn't be solved by a conversation between Bowlsby and Pollard.
I seem to remember there being "incidents" between the teams when they had to cross each other to go to their locker rooms in the past. Wally Burnham and Geno Smith for one.I don't remember it being "necessary" so much as it was a "preference of our current head coach."
These aren't my concerns anyway, I'm just sharing what Pollard said.
It is a reminder to the rest of the league as well.I mean, the letter was fair enough but what's the point of doing this publicly? Can't imagine this couldn't be solved by a conversation between Bowlsby and Pollard.
Just curious, @isufbcurt why do you disagree with this?
It was on the south side in the past
Agree, Campbell and their quarterback, Spencer Sanders, were walking out with their arms around each other. Campbell was kind of leading the way. Security was around both of them.If you put the students in the SE corner, they are next to the visitor's section. IMO not the best scenario. Why not move them to the other side of the stadium? Then they are the ones the players will hear when they enter the stadium. It would basically put them in the same position near the team - like it was before the team switched to the west side.
We recorded the game and watched it Sunday. At the end of the game, my husband pointed out CMC was with one of the OSU players and walking with him (CMC's security around both). We assume he was helping the OSU player safely move through the crowd.
Because in my opinion the student section is in the perfect spot. It's right where the opposing team enters the field. It's literally a perfect location for the students to annoy the opponents. I also think the entire storming the field vs opposing players thing is way overblown.
Story time - Okie state my Jr. year I got a late hit penalty on the opening kickoff, nothing malicious just finishing my block and didn't hear the whistle, the student section was right behind our bench and they let me hear about it the entire game. This is what the student section is for, to annoy the opposing team.
Yes. I have. And as odd as it sounds, you ask them questions about themselves quicker than they can answer. It has suppressed very intense situations on more occasions than I care to remember. But it does work.Ever tried to reason with a drunk person let alone a drunk 18-22 year old?
I agree with you that the student section being in a place where they can impact the other team's sideline is a great plan in the overall scheme of things. I said it is in a horrible spot for field storms, which I think is 100% true. While 99.9% of fans (and players) act in an appropriate way during field storms, it is an emotional time and some people can lose their cool or do things that they shouldn't do. Having the opposing team cross paths with the student section during a field storm isn't a great set-up and IMO increases the odds of a negative incident, which could lead to a strict policy of no field storms, which would be a shame because I love them and think they are fun.
That's true, but you can take steps to mitigate the risk of it occuring. Moving the student section to the opposite corner of the stadium, for example, would put the fans most likely to rush the field in the farthest possible position from where the opposing players would be leaving the field. Would it absolutely prevent all incidents from ever occuring? Of course not, but it might reduce the opportunities for incidents.Honestly I am not concerned about 1 person out of thousands. If that 1 person acts dumb then they get what is coming to them. Imo 1 person out of thousands is immaterial and not worth the effort to change things.
Field storms are going to happen regardless of a policy in place. The only way to stop it would be 1) put a fence up so people can't get out of the stands or 2) have the Army stationed around the field.
No matter where you put the students (and it's not always the students being dumb) if they wanted to get to an opposing player during a field storm they will.
The Iowa band would still not use it.Have we considered an elaborate set of hidden doors under the field? In the event of an upset/field storm, the opposing team can retreat into a web of underground bunkers. Complete with secret bus access like the bat cave.
It's a good idea.
They would if there was a sign on it that read "Iowa Band: Do NOT Go In Here"The Iowa band would still not use it.
