Just curious to read some responses to this:

What is the purpose of the Big 12 Tournament?

The conference tournaments provide all teams (with the exception of the Ivy League teams) a second chance to get into the NCAA tournament. That's why NCAA tourney expansion talk is/was BS. If you did not have conference tournaments, half the teams would start mailing it in starting in mid-February.

They also make alot of money.

When was the last time a Big 12 team got in the NCAA tournament solely by virtue of winning the tournament? It has happened in some other conferences over the years, such as in 2008 with Georgia in the SEC. To me, this just makes the rest of the conference look worse.

To me - even as a fan of a school who has won more than half of the tournaments - the conference tournament is, at best, a money grab. Which is fine, I guess, because every other conference does the same thing.

Random Trivia (don't look it up, cheaters) - Who was the only player in Big 12 Tournament history to lose a game and still win MOP?

Well, when your best team loses to VCU and UNI in the NCAA tournament, I'm not sure it really matters.

It doesn't make the conference look worse if a low-seeded team wins the tourney. In fact, it helps bring in more money to the conference if another conference team is not bumped out of the NCAA tourney as a result.

Mizzou got in the NCAA tourney a couple of times solely as a result of winning the conference tourney back in the B8 days but I don't think it has happened since the start of the B12. Winning 4 games in 4 days makes it more of a challenge. Baylor came close a couple of years ago. With the new 10 team format, the odds are now increased of a low=seeded B12 team stealing an auto qualifying bid in the NCAA tourney.

For a Power conference its no about winning it. A team on the verge can solidify their bid by making a run. I think having one team dominate is worse for the image of the league than having the lower seeds make a run. The Big East is a perfect example, they have lower seeds make runs quite often and it only strengthens the image of the conference.

three day, eight team tournament; 9th & 10th place teams aren't included.

Bad idea there. Need to include everyone and make the bottom 4 teams play an additional game. Right decision. No brainer.

The mens' tourney has been in OKC at least twice. I was there in March 2009 I think. We play OK State in the 1st round. Women made it to the semi's I think and lost to Baylor the eventual champs.
