Bikers on Roads

Riding in the remote county roads is the safest place for a cyclist.

You may want to tell that to Doug Smith, the guy we're talking about who got hit on a rural road.


Just looking through the deaths/injuries in Iowa a lot of them are on rural roads.

Killed: Randy Van Zee, 56, of Sheldon, struck from behind on County Road B14 in northwestern Iowa on April 4, 2008.

Injured: Teresa Pugh - hit & run on Boonville road near De Soto, May 8th 2008.


Killed: Marie Degn, 67, of Northwood, was struck by truck on Hwy. 105 east of Lake Mills on September 27th, 2007

It was clear by your logic you were dismissing law-and making this a 'fairness' contest. Your fairness was based upon whomever is bigger gets the rule of the road. While tragic, I could probably find that many who were killed/injured YESTERDAY in vehicle on vehicle crashes.

Seems like perhaps we should remove cars from the roads, by that logic.

And, since car drivers STILL don't have God-like perfection and foreknowledge, bicyclists STILL are taking on risk by riding on country roads.

There are things both sides can do to alleviate the risk, but I just don't "get" bicyclists who stubbornly dig in and refuse to "because they have an equal right to the road dagnabit!"

Actually, I am a meticulous driver who not only drives the speed limit, but I slow for conditions. And always stops at signs, uses signals, exercizes caution, and I STILL have close-calls with bicyclists now and again. Which scares me and ticks me off.

i drive to fast, don't stop at most signs, text message while i drive, and yet to have any trouble with cyclists. I have been hit four times by stupid drivers though...so outside of the obvious(my insurance premiums should be higer) are you telling me you DON"T have problems with other motorists "now and again"?

Being a motorcycle rider, I can understand some of the issues that bikes face. Every year I have people pulling out in front of me, tailgating me, passing close, etc.

Like I've said before, the only issue I have with bikes is the difference in speed. I don't think any vehicle that averages 15mph should be allowed on roads where the speed limit is 55mph unless they have some major flags, signs, lights, etc.

I couldn't find a good place that lists all the deaths so i went to BikeIowa. Here are some older ones that include both rural and urban. You can see that this is far from being just an urban problem.

2008

• Paul Varum, 43, of Webster City was forced off his bike as a vehicle did a u-turn right in front of him. the vehicle ran over the seat and rear-wheel of Paul's bike and then took off. Paul luckily escaped with only a few scrapes. May 15th 2008.
• Shakarian Jenkins, 4, of Des Moines was seriously injured in a truck-bicycle accident in Des Moines on May 26th

• Killed: Brian Shaver Ankeny, IA September 11, 2005 – early morning training ride – hit by drunk driver

2004

• Killed: Daniel Wisnousky, 37 Ames, IA October 23, 2004 - was run over by a grain wagon pulled by a tractor.
• Killed: Jean Ann Mohr, 51, of Galva when she was struck by a pickup while riding her bicycle west of Schaller. She was pronounced dead at the scene. September 18th 2004.
• Killed: Caleb Krile, 14, of Eddyville was killed when the bike they were riding together was hit from behind by a car in Oskaloosa. The boys were then thrown into the path of another car. Troopers say the boys' bicycle did not have lights. September 8th 2004.
• Killed: Taylor Lewis, 14, of Oskaloosa was killed when the bike they were riding together was hit from behind by a car in Oskaloosa. The boys were then thrown into the path of another car. Troopers say the boys' bicycle did not have lights. September 8th 2004.

• Injured: Graham Johnston, 28, of Des Moines hit by a car in Des Moines and hospitalized with broken jaw, broken nose and major facial lacerations on June 5th 2004.

• Killed: Jonathan Schutt, 30, of Ames, was riding southbound on the crossing's pedestrian walkway when he was struck by an eastbound train. He had a hearing problem. December 2002

2001

• Killed: Suzette Carson, 37, of Colfax, was killed by a drunk driver in Colfax on her way home from a convenience store in 2001.

1999

• Killed: Sheri Jacobs, 23 years old. Killed 4/1/99 on 74th st West Des Moines. Hit from behind by a drunk driver.

While I see your point, and agree with you when things suddenly jump over to I-235, I-80 (where I believe bikes are illegal anyway)....

I don't see how such a 55mph rule is feasible. My wife and I regularly will cruise about ther rural areas outside DM (in a car, property hunting) - there isn't a road out there that really isn't 55 mph (if you can find a speed limit sign at all)

You show me somebody riding up 235, 141 or 330 (who isn't doing it to get from one street to another) and I'll agree you got an idiot on your hands.

You still don't get it. I'm not debating the merits of what is right or wrong. I'm not arguing the points that cyclist have rights or don't have rights. I'm not condoning one action over the other.

I am simply stating that when faced with death or injury you can stand on principle all you want. You can emphatically cry out I HAVE RIGHTS until you are blue in the face. You can have rights all you want and in the end you are still dead or injured.

I'm not siding on one side or the other with this issue, only that when autos and bikes hit, guesse what, the auto comes out better all the time.

Why as a bicyclist would I not understand that and do everything i could to minimize or reduce this risk?

I'll also note that there are few in there the lay out it WAS the biker's fault. And even one that was injured on Raccoon River Valley Trail. ?????

2004, all save one appear to be biker issues. (Run over by a grain trailer?)

The last two, killed by a drunk driver. Yeah - that never happens to anyone but bikers....

My wife's family knew Dr Breedlove. Although not official - it's suspected he died of a heartattack or some other issue. He crossed the road into oncoming traffic. Anyone who knew the many realizes this is more than just an accident.

What's the criteria for this list? Are they all vehicle/bike accidents? Many (2007) just say injured while biking, not much detail how.

Nobody cares if you "feel better". They have legal right to be on the road. There are x10 deaths, x100 injuries and x10000 accidents on the same
roads in vehicle on vehicle accidents.

Thenumbers would suggest that the problem is not the bikers...

DUH-is probably the best way to end your post. If you would have started with that...and ended you would have wasted a lot less CF server space.

This IS about LAW. This IS about FAIRNESS(equal protection). This IS about motorists being held to the standard by which they are obligated as licensed drivers.

I realize there are risks. My business partners realize I take those risks. My wife realizes I take those risks(and insure them to my best ability so as to indemnify potential loss). What pisses me off is blatant disregard for the rules of the road by motorists(and cyclists for that matter) that amplify those risks. Riding a bike is tricky enough(as is driving a car if we were all honest about that risk)...but to have it complicated by some idiot that doesn't care for the rules makes me want to fight for my rights.

I don't need a non-cyclist listing out the risks...what is needed from non-cyclists is pretty basic: follow the rules of the road.

I also dive, snorkel, adventure race...I understand RISK, I don't need you to amplify the risks because of your ignorance...or blatant disregard for the laws.

Here is some good info on riding bikes. It's sounds to me like people dying on bikes is a little over-hyped.

The crazy thing is that this guy actually died on a bike.

15.5% to 2.4% That's nearly ten times as often. Which is reflected in my perceptiont that bicyclists are 10 times more likely to be riding like a bunch of idiots than motorists driving like idiots. But we all know that bicyclists are perfect creatures, incapable of doing wrong and besides, they help preserve the environment. Maybe as fertilizer, but they help preserve the environment. So c'mon bikers, lighten up a little.

Let's see...how many of the recent spat of biking accidents were a result of the cyclist breaking a law? None, it's been the driver doing something illegal.

That is because all the publicity is against stupid motorists. Very seldom do idiot bicyclist get histrionic articles in the DMR when they commit suicide by stupidity on their bike. Your data sample is extremely flawed.

Prolly because I used to drive a ton more than you do, at least until this overseas thing started in 2006. Think 9 hours a day solid driving. And I do have problems with motorists, I just don't fear killing them in minor accidents caused by inattention or an honest mistake.

You obviously are not processing the the data point that what would be a minor fender bender car to car could be a fatality on a bike. I wished we could do without the sheer emotionalism.

This IS about LAW. This IS about FAIRNESS(equal protection). This IS about motorists being held to the standard by which they are obligated as licensed drivers.

I realize there are risks. My business partners realize I take those risks. My wife realizes I take those risks(and insure them to my best ability so as to indemnify potential loss). What pisses me off is blatant disregard for the rules of the road by motorists(and cyclists for that matter) that amplify those risks. Riding a bike is tricky enough(as is driving a car if we were all honest about that risk)...but to have it complicated by some idiot that doesn't care for the rules makes me want to fight for my rights.

I don't need a non-cyclist listing out the risks...what is needed from non-cyclists is pretty basic: follow the rules of the road.

I also dive, snorkel, adventure race...I understand RISK, I don't need you to amplify the risks because of your ignorance...or blatant disregard for the laws.

In the end you are amplifying the risk because of your acute stubberness to realize that a certain segment of auto drivers do not care about bikers yet you stay firm and planted in your comfort thinking that since you have rights all is good.

i think there are a lot of people that would agree with your assesment of DL. I am pretty neutral-but there are folks out there that aren't big fans. But heck if my name was posted here-there would be more than one person that had less than stellar reviews
