I think Self is an a-hole but not taking joy in his health issues. I never take joy in anyone having health issues even if I can't stand them as they have family and friends too that are affected and I would hope that if the same ever happened to me or my family and friends we have enough compassion in this world to look past our differences. Hope he recovers well and I don't blame him one bit if he takes a break or retires from coaching but I would not be surprised to see him in the ear of a ref next year in Hilton either.

I'm not going to try and defend it, but I've warmed up to Self over the years. He's a cheat but I still kind of like the guy. He's settled into the elder statesman of college basketball coaches so he's entertaining in interviews, plus his teams are kinda mid lately. I think the league is less without him in it.

I think he became much more pleasant after the first heart thing.

Met him in person down in Lawrence, of course wearing my ISU gear. Couldn't have been nicer and very complimentary of Iowa State. You see some of these guys from afar and form opinions but then you meet them and it changes 360 degrees.
Shouldn't it be 180 degrees? If it's 360 isn't it back to your original opinion?

I kid I kid ;)

Bills public persona is that of an A hole. However, every single person u know that has ever met him has said he is a super nice guy. Which I tend to believe a lot of these coaches that people hate are more hated because they are rivals than them actually being a horrible person.

People aren't going to be raised to the position of a D1 college coach unless they are extremely charismatic, charming, friendly and likeable. I'm guessing even Nick Saban is completely different behind the scenes than his public persona.

Didn't realize he was on the staff.
I didn't either. I looked him up to see where he was currently coaching. I thought he was still in the NBA. Wouldn't surprise me if Self hired him with the understanding that he'd take over in a few years.

Self is as real as they come for coaches. He certainly engages in gamesmanship and other things on court as one does, but he's a pretty straight up dude otherwise and doesn't pretend to be something other than himself. There's plenty of fake coaches out there and he's certainly not one of them -- I can respect that. The sport definitely loses a legend and a personality without him around someday.
