Hoiberg said during the preseason that he'd like to play even faster this season; a move that would make Art Briles jealous.

So is CW requiring one Art Briles reference in each story, or was this an attempt to get him to read the article?

Here nor there
Nice article, as usual, hitting the nail squarely on the head. Team and individual defense will ultimately be the key to how far this team goes. I started a post earlier suggesting Hogue, Morris, and McKay have the potential to be on the Big XII All-Defensive team. Although it was just an exhibition game, BDJ certainly showed the athleticism necessary for him to also be under consideration for the All-D team. Fred has already emphasized that to BDJ and if he applies himself to D, we could be a very tough team to score against. Niang's defense should also be improved due to his improved conditioning and weight loss.
True, all about defense, rebounding, (and imo intangibles like chemistry).

We have the physical tools to be better on defense. Those three have the ability and mindset to be on the Big 12 All-Defensive Team. Edozie will likely not see enough minutes, but I think he is a "plus" defender and Naz and Nader have the ability to be at least average. BDJ may be a Royce like defender, and we do have 7'1" guy.
We also have depth to handle fouls better, which should help.

All that said, it is going to come down to how committed we are defense.

So, Blum, do you have a prediction of where we will finish in the defensive stats? How far above #72 do you think we move? And does it really matter? Since we are such an explosive offensive team, we will probably never rank very high defensively.

And another angle to this...

How high does ISU need to rank to win it.

I don't know that we need to be any higher than top 50.

Love the point at the end about foul trouble. The last couple years, if a post player got beat it usually led to a dunk as Georges or Melvin backed off to avoid drawing the foul. With the added depth this year, they should be able to afford to foul.
Rarely did ISU commit smart fouls in the paint. More often than not a foul in the post was pretty weak and led to and 1 situations.

As a Cyclone, Cubs, and Bears fan, I wouldn't even know what to do if ISU made a Final Four or National Championship game. I was 3 years old when the Bears won the Super Bowl and I remember how excited I was when the Bears made the Super Bowl several years back. But for it to happen to Iowa State, it would be 50x sweeter.

Nothing would compare to Cyclones making the Final Four. And if they win the National Championship, I will cry like a little baby. It is the one sports wish I want more than anything else.

If we won the national championship I would vote to immediately rename Hilton to Hoiberg Family Coliseum.

Georges was notorious for this...and reaching in after he gets the ball stolen or misses a shot, even though he knows he has no chance to get a steal. Back on topic, think about how many layups or dunks we have given up the last few years. Recent KU games really come to mind, they get a ton of easy baskets against us.

It's hard to be "win it all good" with that mediocre of a defense. Of the last 44 Final Four participants, only one (2011 VCU) ended its season with a defense outside of the top 50.

It's hard to win multiple games in a row without being fairly decent at getting stops, especially because you never know if your team's shots are going to fall in those big games in weird arenas.
