Seriously...most of these people are right.

I would rather wear a Hawkeye shirt in front of AJ Klein than live in Marshalltown or Boone.

If you have to choose between these two, just think of it this way:

Taco Johns or Walmart.

Mexico vs. White Trash

If you go to Urban Dictionary, both towns are in the top 5 search for "Iowa ********"

Urban Dictionary: iowa ********

Boone, Marshalltown, Ames......Three peas in a pod except Ames has a University and with that way too high housing cost supported by all the government jobs.

Fail Ames is much nicer than either Boone or M-Town. High housing cost I will agree with though.

Completely agree Wesley but I'd get an RV.

You can drive to whatever town you want to live in, stay over night at beautiful Jack Trice, live at the fairgrounds for a week, go on RAGBRAI for a week, stay at the Boone raceway, take it on away football games...

This may be one of the best ideas I've heard yet. Dare I say...BRILLIANT!

The possibilities are endless...

Rep to you.

Boone is much closer to ames..... Live in Ames, commute to Boone. I grew up in Boone. when I was a kid it wasn't too bad of a place to live..... nowadays it seems to be going down hill. I currently live in Ames and consider myself an Amesian?.. Amesenite?..... and no longer a Boonite. I love living in Ames and would never consider living in Marshaltown. I have never spent a whole lot of time in MT but understand it can be quite the rough town.

Also your added costs to living in boone are probably because of its proximity to DM. From what I hear the cost of living in Boone is getting comparable to living in Ames. I' sure the taxes are lower in Boone, but Boone always seems to be short of money.

"Boonie." It's "Boonie."

I lived in Boone for a few years. No, there's not a ton going on, but it's 15 minutes from Ames. Anything you want to do, you can drive to. I mean, Marshalltown has a Hardee's, which is cool, but I'd work in Boone.

Nevada is a great little town, and you could buy my townhouse!

Ames is only nicer because of theUniversity - Which ironically, a certain sect of Ames“leadershipâ€￾ seemingly ignores while supporting a non-growth agenda. Ames wasspecial 20 years ago but hasn’t grown with the times and currently isn’tanything outstanding relative to several other communities and cities acrossthe country that have embraced progress and have grown under a plannedblueprint of development. Sorry but Ames is not all that different from Booneor M-Town, It just happens to have a major University. Other than that, theplace, overall, kind sucks. It's sad, really.

Whens the last time you were in Ames? Pre-2010, yeah it was bad. But the last few years, with South Duff finally being updated, Iowa State and the City making renovations to make everything nicer, it really is a nice place. The only place in Ames that reminds me of Marshalltown is North Grand Mall.

I have to say, I'm always amazed at people's willingness to commute. If you don't care about schools, why pay more to drive farther daily to work just so you can be closer to entertainment a couple times per week?

So did you read that nasty bug thread with those horrific house centipedes? The first time I saw one of those devils was in Marshalltown. Husband lived there on internship for 9 months and there wasn't much going on besides Zeno's. He also got laid off while there and the swine flu broke out all over town........so my impression is not good, LOL! I agree with other comments - I would live in Ames and commute to Boone. The west side is very much up and coming from what I remember (back in 2010).

But it has the university, so it's nicer, case closed. Any new business?

The University is nicer. The city is no different or better then Boone or M-Town. Time to call a spade a spade. Ames is no different then Boone or M-town. It does have higher priced houses though.

The more I read, the less attractive the Marshalltown offer is. Anyone looking to buy a nice house in Northern Illinois?

just reading back through - where at in Northern IL, west or east? Not that I'm buying, I'm in Madison now, lol. Family is from that area though.

When's the last time you have been outside of Ames or even to another city or state for that matter. Sorry to burst your little self induced bubble. And to answer your question, just today. Nothing has changed. It's 1980 all over again.

Well I've lived in two states since then, and spent enough time in Marshalltown for a lifetime. I would take a paycut to go back to Ames and live there. I loved that town. It consistently gets awards for being one of the best small towns to live in.

Plus their tap water was the best ever.

It's funny that another person a few months ago was asking where they should live in the Des Moines metro. A bunch of people were blowing Des Moines and how diverse it was compared to the suburbs. I guess diversity doesn't count towards mexicans.

East of Rockford. Tired of paying the high real estate taxes up here. But that discussion belongs in another thread..

I will respect your opinion and I hope you respect mine.

And my opinion is that you are crazy if you think Marshalltown, Boone, and Ames are a lot alike.

Hey, I graduated in 1980. Ames rocked back then!

(my wife is rolling her eyes right now)
