This. I have friends who went to Coe or Simpson or whatever and cheer for Iowa (or any school) and that doesn’t bother me at all because they’re different divisions and literally will never compete. Uni has their own football and basketball team that plays Iowa/ISU. Why they don’t cheer for them when they play baffles me.

I don’t understand this line of thinking. Why should someone be forced to throw away 10+ years of fanhood simply because of where they went to school?

Be true to your school.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. You can be “true” to your school for the other 11 games they play. I think it’s silly to expect someone to abandon a lifetime of fandom because they went to a different school.

I don't expect to change the minds of tavernhawks. They've been brainwashed.

What’s funny to me is the people I know who went to their respective state school for better academics (Iowa for med, ISU for Ag, etc) have switched over their allegiance to where they’ll get their degree from and i totally respect them.

The people who confuse me are the ones who attend ISU/Iowa/UNI for education or marketing or business when all 3 offer same major, comparable cost and rankings. If you’re that big of a hawk fan and you’re liberal arts major, why the hell don’t you just go to Iowa?

Are they the same cost though? I always thought UNI was significantly cheaper than the other two in-state schools, although I could be wrong.

Edit: I see that the price difference is only for out-of-state students, so disregard. Regardless, I don’t see the harm in someone rooting for the same team they grew up rooting for you. Do you think that someone who grows up an Alabama fan but attends Auburn (for whatever reason) is going to switch allegiances? I’m going to guess that most would not.

My contempt for UNI comes from my in-laws mostly

They are from eastern Iowa, and multiple family members went to UNI. Only one went to Iowa. ALL of them are 100% for Iowa and pay no attention to UNI, with two exceptions: the 1 week a year that ISU plays UNI in football, and whenever UNI makes the NCAA tourney. Otherwise they couldn't tell you a damn thing about the UNI teams. But, those two times a year, they are ALL IN PANTHER SUPERFANS. The years when we lost to them in football were painful.

The Pantherhawk syndrome is real, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Having lived in both North Eastern and Eastern Iowa for ~4 years I can completely confirm this.

I find this idea of loyalty interesting.
I'm a UNI Panther fan. I root for UNI, am a multi-sport season ticket holder (and user!), and give quite a bit of $$ each year. I do that because I live in CF and I like supporting the home team. If I moved to Ames, I would likely do the same for ISU.

Some of you are probably horrified with my lack of loyalty. I'll tell you one thing. Without this feeling of "loyalty" and ethics related to fandom, the current cheating scandal would devastate college sports. It takes a high level of loyalty to put up with an obviously unequal playing field.

From 13-17. He wasn't a star, but would have been solid for us.

He was solid. The panther/hawk guys heard about the Iowa State and immediately thought he would be a star at that level.

He wasn’t quite a star, but a good solid player. He’d have contributed here as well.

Funny, I seem to recall we were more interested in Morgan for football. Guess the memory plays tricks.
