Have to believe Dolphins trading away pick 29 for Tyreek Hill hurts Breece’s chances for RD 1. A lot can happen, but Miami was one of the teams that was in the market.

The Bills' beat writer for The Athletic has them taking Breece with the 25th pick.

His justification is pretty solid. Devin Singletary is on the last year of his rookie contract and has earned a pretty substantial second contract at this point. Assuming they let Singletary walk in the 2023 offseason, they need to find someone to take his role in the future. Taking an RB in the late 1st gives 5 years of player control on a team friendly contract. The Bills signing TE OJ Howard fits with their trend toward using 2 TEs and more of a run game at the tail end of last season, so investing at RB makes sense as well.

The Bills other big areas of need are CB and WR. At WR, they just signed two slot guys with McKenzie and Crowder, and have Diggs and Davis under contract for 2 more years. At CB, they need a boundary corner to play opposite Tre White, but GM Brandon Beane has been willing to be patient with taking CBs in the middle rounds.

All it takes is one team to fall in love...

But with that said, I think it's far more likely that he'll hear his name called on day 2. Hopefully early.

90% odds to be RB1, but like 20% chance to go round 1 imo. Someone is likely gonna get a bargain.

I do hope he goes round one though. He's awesome. He'll contribute from week 1.

If this draft goes how previous ones have for ISU, we get all hyped about a potential first rounder only to see Breece be RB3 and go in the 3rd round. Then Kolar in the 5th and Rose and Uwazarike UFAs. The NFL draft is so weird. We see our backup RB in Kene go in the 3rd? round, but any of our past starters like ARob don't get a sniff. Akers makes a practice squad while Hakeem Butler is out of football. A lot of it doesn't make sense to me.

So true ...and then some random players from schools like Wisconsin-Plattville getting drafted, lol

UNI has a first round OL that ISU and iowa flat out passed on. Even staffs that are good at eval aren't anywhere close to perfect.

I know he'll be drafted highly but I am not sold on Penning, especially as a pass blocker. Awesome athlete though.

I just hope he goes to a good team...that is in need of a RB that will help them get to the top of the league. It would be fun to see him contributing to a playoff run or better. The Bills keep getting mentioned and that would be ideal...and I am not a Bills fan (although I enjoy watching them).

Agreed. It would be great for Iowa State if he went in the first round, but I honestly wonder if it wouldn't be better for Breece if he didn't go in the first round. With a running back, getting to that second contract as early as possible is important. And all first round picks include a team option for a 5th year. The difference in money between the 32nd pick of the draft and the 33rd isn't that large, but being able to sign a 2nd contract/hit free agency a year early would make a difference, considering the shelf life of running backs.

NFL Network had a Mock Draft show on tonight and one of their experts, Lance Zierlein, had Breece going #29 to Arizona Cardinals who had traded down to that spot in his mock.

I saw that too. They spent what, 5-10 min just on Breece, showing highlights the whole time. Very cool to see.

Here's the profootballtalk take

The most telling section is this:
"In the last decade only two running backs drafted in the Top 10 have played well enough to earn second contracts — Ezekiel Elliott and Christian McCaffrey — and both of those contracts are now drags on their teams’ salary caps"

Now I don't think even the most dyed in the wool Cyclone fan has aspirations of Breece going in the top 10, but the above quote is just another indicator of the reasons why teams don't value the RB position like they used to.
