By my count Campbell is 13-21 in 1 score games against FBS opponents in his ISU tenure. If you throw out the 1-3 his first year while building the program then it’s 12-18. Not terrible but could be better. Though we managed to finally get over the hump against Iowa this year I’m concerned that we’re finding ways to lose most of the close games, particularly since the start of last season. There are no bad teams in the Big 12 this year and everyone has a competent QB. We need to start winning some of these close games because every game left on our schedule could be a 1 score game. There are no gimmes like Rutgers, Northwestern or Nebraska to pad the record.

There are way more gimmies in the Big 10 than those 3.

That's mostly on coaching IMO.

You have games like yesterday’s that qualify as one score games that really shouldn’t. Can skew your record either way really.
This is so true. Many of our one score losses were shaping up to be more than that. Then a mad scramble at the end from us to cut it to 7 or less.

Same could be said the other way. Three point lead, tack on a TD close to the end, and it doesn't count in that statistic.

A better stat may be how many FBS games have we won by more than one score vs. how many we have lost by more than one? I don't know.

Agree, looking simply at the final score doesn't tell the whole story. How many games has CMC lost by more than one score?

Record in one score games is pretty meaningless. It just means we are usually in every game based on our playing style. Coach Mac would probably have a better record in one score games because we got blown out a lot, even in good seasons.

I like that most our losses are one score and the 55-3, 59-14, 71-7 games won't happen again with Campbell. It's rare we lose by more than a tuddy these days.
Our talent and recruiting has improved! We still haven’t got the top end recruits like a Texas or OU. Meaning our margin for error is slim. It’s not everything but it is something.

I agree with that, however, I also wonder how many one score games we're in compared to most teams?

We seem to be in a ton of them, and I think that goes to CMC's coaching style. When we get up a little, we get SUPER conservative and try to just hold on it seems. That's no way to win games IMO. Our defense seems to do a great job of keeping opponents scoring pretty low, so the game will always be close unless our offense happens to play really well and can score quite a few points. But that's hard to do when you try to take the air out of the ball when you get up a little.

Every game that goes by it's crazy how eerily similar CMC is to KF at Iowa... and that's not necessarily a good thing. Sometimes I wonder which one of those two is more conservative actually. It's easy to just say KF is.... but CMC is very close.

How does this compare to the 7 years prior to Matt Campbell’s arrival? How many one score games did we have?

So you are saying he would be a natural fit to coach the ToW?

It’s a lot tbh, that’s why small mistakes are magnified. We looked a lot better on Special teams yesterday with coverages, Baylor kept everyone back for strong returns but we did really good.

Unfortunately other folks noticed a similar trend as well, moved to 5-13 in this stat after Saturday.
