Cards always come out at some point whether with family gatherings or with friends. Kinda surprised no one’s mentioned Phase 10. Uno is good for a first game with young kids. We also get into Mexican Train which is a distant cousin of dominoes. We are competitive and play to win. Somewhere around late grade school, the gloves come off and kids are eligible for trash talk. Pretty hilarious when some sweet little 6th grade granddaughter puts a smart ass confident Uncle in his place in front of the family with a shot comment that shuts him up. When the 3 generations get together there are 10 so that’s why it’s Train & Phase 10.

Not me. Used to love playing pinochle with my gramps. Poor guy passed away four years ago and we have never played since. :(:(
Pinochle is our traditional family game also. Both of my parents are gone now, but the tradition still lives on. We may have 4-5 tables going at the same time, when there is a larger gathering.

When you’re in first position how am I suppose to know whether to lead trump or not when I don’t have an off suit ace, and when you partner calls for the face up card to be trump?
No decision to ponder. Lead trump. That’s what your partner wants to play. They better have 3 tricks on their own tho

Here are some non-traditional card games besides UNO I've found to be fun to play:

Love Letter
Five Crowns
Sushi Go
Red 7
Pairs
The Game
Exploding Kittens

We do no device time in our house starting at 6:30pm. Our oldest child was having night terrors about an hour or 2 after going to bed and would have some rough nights sleeping. We started to look into ways to fix the sleep issues and screen time and things that stimulate kids came to the top of the list. So starting at 6:30 we play games or do something other than use electronics and it's made a big difference in sleep quality. We usually play board games or card games until it's time for the kids to take a bath and go to bed. Our 10 and 7 year olds love to play Euchre and chess along with a lot of other games that challenges them. After bath time they read for about 15-20 minutes before lights out. Both kids sleep well and the hour or so we set aside at night is a nice wind down for all of us.
So...you're saying your kids are dirty card players?

Pepper was the game of choice growing up. Farmers would gather at a local rural bar on winter mornings (esp. Sat.) and that's how I got introduced. It didn't take long to figure out that most wouldn't risk the first quarter they ever made to try and set you so in the right crowd you could win by simply outbidding them in the right situation and take home a modest pot. The game evolved with younger brash players--"dirty clubs" (you had to stay if someone got the bid in clubs), higher stakes ($5/set, $10-$20 game), double in the hole (you paid double if your score was negative at the end of the game). After a while, payment after such games was simply made by trading "IOU's" safely tucked away in your wallet from previous games. None of us could afford it and when the bar eventually closed I did witness checks being written between $300-$700 between players to settle debts. No casinos at the time but very equivalent.

Oh both know when to try a loaner in Euchre and doesn't shock us anymore when they pull it off. When they were learning they were eager to do it because mom and dad did but had to learn that you can't try a loaner with most hands.

Kind of sounds like what I call “Country Boomer Pitch”.
Trying to remember. You played with the Eucre deck plus the eights (and maybe the 7s?) I think Spades was always trump. The top card in the reduced deck was the Queen of Clubs, Followed by the Queen of Spades. If you were dealt the queen of Clubs you were automatically required to get 3 tricks. If you were dealt the Queen of Spades you were the secret partner (Nobody knew you were the partner except you; not even the person dealt the Queen of Clubs).

I love cards! I'd play just about anything.

I wish card clubs like old people years ago, just younger.

It's weird though the game i really don't like to play is poker.

We played euchre tonight with parents vs kids and the kids finally beat the parents. Our 2nd grader got set early but beat us with a loaner and they also set us on another hand. The 5th grader took all hands on another round where she should of.called a loaner. They usually do rock paper scissors to pick who plays with me as they both apparently think I am the best Euchre player in the house but tonight we said they are stuck with each other. The funny thing is we were excited for them finally beating us and they didn't seem as excited as we thought they would.

We were super into it in high school and had a ton of tournaments. Tried going up to Canterbury in Minnesota at 18 only to get our asses handed to us. I agree though. It’s just not for me anymore.

Learned pitch (4pt) from a buddy in high school. Still play 4pt and 5pt (20 years later). Love hearts, euchre and cribbage. Will play pepper and spades… just not my favorite. Anyone play huckly-buck? Not sure if that’s how it’s spelled.

500 is far superior to Euchre, I always wonder why more people don't play it.

My parents have played with the same group of 5 other couples every month for about 35 years.
My folks used to be in a card club, when it was their turn to host us 3 kids thought it was a big deal because they would let the 3 of us split a 16 oz bottle of pop.LOL. Fun memory anyway.
