Suppose we do blame Bartman for 2004. Who do we blame for the other 100 years?

I was blown away by the ******* they interviewed who happily admitted to going down to the area where Bartman was seated to "give him his two cents." I think that was the same guy who threw the first beer at Bartman. Eight years later, and no remorse or anything close to it. He was laughing about it. Grade A ********* right there.

Everyone blames him for just sitting there with his headphones on. What the hell would you have done when 40,000+ are screaming and yelling at you? I probably would have done the same thing.

I'm honestly surprised he kept his cool like that. Surprised he didn't start crying or something. 40,000 + screaming ******* at you probably doesn't make you feel too good about yourself.

This is why Bartman went into hiding. Can't say that I blame him. But I do think there is something wierd about him. Perhaps it is a variation of the typical loser Cub fan mentality (of which I am one). He looks like the kind of guy who lives for Cubs baseball. And that is a really good seat. I imagine that he was probably in that seat (with his headphones) for every game. And I suspect that the thought of having ruined the World Series is devastating for him.

my professional psychological review of the situation (i watched dr phil a couple months ago, so i'm qualified):

If he didn't look like such a ****** (esp. with the headphones) and sit their the entire time dazed and out of the moment, there wouldn't have been nearly the same focus placed on him

he was making it way too easy to pile the whole situation on him

I agree with this somewhat. I can't criticize Bartman's reaction, as I have no idea what the "proper" reaction is in this situation. I do agree with the documentary that much of the backlash towards him was because he was such a meek and aloof appearing guy. It lead people to say "Why do you have front row seats to an NLCS game if you are going to wear headphones and not pay attention to what is going on." If he's an athletic looking guy in a Cubs jersey and baseball hat he doesn't catch as much grief.

Every person would have done that. I would, you would, everybody would. Most fans know that the game was not lost by him, it was by the players. The fans and atmosphere in Wrigley changed, and he became a scapegoat.

Also, don't give me that "Cubs fans deserve to be cursed." If any other team with an extended drought of World Series appearances, and this happened to them. Random fan interference, outfielder acting the way he did, ridiculous errors, and allowing 8 runs in the top of the 8th. ANY fanbase would have reacted the same. Hell, even Yankee fans who win all the time would have done it. So don't say crap like that. Everybody knows it was an overreaction, and the vast majority of people know it wasn't his fault, and we feel horribly for this guy.

I often have thought about that kid who Yankee fans call a hero when he caught that "homerun" by reaching out over the fence to grab it. If they would have made the interference call like they should have (it was clearly not over the fence) he would have been a pariah as well.

Are you serious??? The NL West (while it may be bad) has 3 teams over .500, the AL Central has 1. Not only that they had a team win the world series last year. I know this doesn't say much, but it still counts.

You're going off of one year??? That's kind of a superficial perspective given the context of your eariler comment.

I'm relatively certain that there have been a number of years in the not too distant past where the NL West champ has barely been over .500. The Sox have a title in that span, and I believe the Tigers were in the WS at least once recently as well. And, if the Twins didn't have to play the GD Yankees in the 1st round every year (sans this year of course, they do suck this year) the AL Central playoff record would be slightly better, to say the least.

Something that I never thought of before that they brought up was he is listening to the game on the radio which has a 7 second delay. They played the clip with the radio delay and it was just nuts. I was never one to blame him, but this doc made me feel really bad for the guy.

That never registered with me either. I was flipping back and forth between this and the Cards game and eventually quit going back to ESPN as it was just too uncomfortable to watch. I've always felt bad for Bartman but this just took it to another level. As someone else mentioned, that guy that was bragging about coming down and giving him "his 2 cents" and throwing a beer on him absolutely deserves to have his *** kicked.

Finally, regardless of whether that ball was in the stands or not, you'll never convince me that Alou makes that catch. It's not like he was ever a gold glover. His reaction is what will forever doom Bartman.

Edit to add: Bartman had the worst friends EVER. For the people he was with to leave him on an island like that, then leave the game without him is mind blowing to me.

Agreed on all points, I was thinking the same things.

One thing I'd like to add....I just always found it really annoying when people go to games and wear a headset for the radio broadcast. Are you that much of a recluse that you can't be apart of the crowd around you because you want to listen to radio commentary? Just seems really douchey to me.

Well I caught this last night and was riveted and disgusted at the same time. In watching Bartman I see alot of myself a geeky guy who wears glasses and listens to radio broadcast of the game which I do as well for ISU football and basketball games and to the poster I quoted, people do that to find out things explained by the broadcast team that help you understand the game and we enjoy listening to our broadcast team so if wearing earphones makes you a ****** I guess I am one.

Back to the program I can't believe how brutal the fans were to Bartman. If anyone else where in his seat and situation they would have do the same because it's a natural instinct to try and catch a foul ball. If you are a Cubs fan and blame him for the loss in game 6 and the series you are a loser and need to get a life. They still had prior on the mound, had a routine double play ground ball to get out of the inning and a game 7 with Kerry Wood on the mound.

Even though I hated the the entire special was all about blaming Bartman it was a great 30 for 30 film and would have been my all time favorite had Bartman had agreed to talk. Never realized he still lives and works in Chicago, but the part that people should lay off him is the fact he has remained silent and not done anything to profit from his infamy.
