The play calling did not cost us the game. But it was very bad. It's fair to discuss.

Absolutely fair to discuss - that's what this place if for!

I, however, don't think the play-calling was that bad. With a struggling O-Line, nearly every play call is going to seem bad. And, when we get into 2 & 20 situations often, nobody is going to have much success calling plays to overcome that!

Didn't realize we had so many former Division 1 offensive coordinators on this board. I'd like to know what specific plays should have been called in certain situations vs. the plays Manning did call.

Good play call: one that works.
Bad play call: one that doesn't work

There are a very select few on this board (former players) who actually know enough about the X's and O's of our offense to critique play calling.

It wasn't like we kept throwing bubble screens on 3rd and long for 2 yard gains.

The one that probably cost us the game:

The run call on warrens fumble. He run hadn't been working all night (one can argue that they should have run it more earlier, but 4 minutes left down by 5 isn't the time.) Lazard had been extremely good and the UNI player couldn't stop him. Warren had some history (and clearly now has a history) of fumbling late in games. That was an idiotic call.

I'd also say that Jeff woody pointed out a lot of ways UNI was prepared to stop our offense and there was little to no adjustment made.

A very nervous guy trying to say he's qualified for the job ...... I sure hope he shows us very soon . I trust our head coach but this one might be a huge mistake .
I was thinking you are a troll poster, but I may have you confused with someone else..... Sounds trollish

Glad you clarified that its a bad play call by the Manning when Warren fumbles the ball. That is great feedback, I am sure Manning will have learned his lesson and will ask Warren if he plans to fumble the ball next time so Manning can call a different play.

The play where Warren fumbled was a good gain, UNI did a good job of holding Warren up in traffic and knocked the ball out. Funny how in one game Warren has gone from one of the best RBs in ISU history to a chronic fumbler who can't be trusted with the ball!

This was week one and our o-line was a bunch of new starters. That might have impacted the gameplan and play calling. Penalties by the o-line hurt. Its tough to go 20 yards to make first downs. I also doubt it was the coaches plan for Lanning to fumble, throw two INT's and react slowly to a blitz and take a safety.

Sure there were coaching mistakes, but that doesn't mean Manning called a bad game. If players don't make mistakes, ISU wins that game.

Yeah we should let the gal who thinks you can't run the ball with your feature back down by 5 with 4 minutes left call the plays.

Everything seemed vanilla to me which I liked. The only thing I disagreed with was the pass play on 2nd and 4 when we were up 1 in which the receiver ran the wrong route causing an INT.

I didn't have a problem with play calling. Some criticize Manning for the first Lanning pick, but I blame that more on Lanning for not thinking through the situation. My guess is almost every passing play includes a receiver or two going down field to keep the defense honest. It's the QBs job to know the situation and not do anything risky or stupid.
