And to note that all of the the guys in this years class (3 commits and possibly Allen) are incoming freshman, no JUCOs. I think that means the staff is confindent in what we have for next year and are stock piling the talent for the future. We could have a sick passing game with these guys and Rohach slingin it.

We also keep stocking up on OL to develop and groom and have a stable of RBs to go with our 3 young QBs (JB, SR, and GR). The offense could really explode with a little more maturation.

Really good point. No JUCO WRs this year means that the staff is really confident in Bundrage, JQD, and probably at least one or two of the other RSFr/Fr.

(Just noticed that Chris Young is a Jr this year so he will be provide get some snaps next year, but probably not many more than this year)

We had 7 guys play this year so at least 2 of the young guys will be counted on to play.

Let's look at the WRs from our last few recruiting classes.

2011
Bundrage 6'2
JQ Daniels 6'4 (possibly TE prospect but currently at WR)
Tad Ecby 6'1
Aaron Horne 5'9 (Jr)
Teddy Lampkin 5'7

2010
Albert Gary 5'9
Jarvis West 5'7
Chris Young 5'11 (Jr)

2009
Darius Reynolds 6'2 (Jr)
Josh Lenz 6'
Keith Blanton
Donnie Jennert

2008
Darius Darks
Jason Carlson
Sedrick Johnson
Lonzie Range

We have no RsSRs from the 2008 class and only Lenz will be back from the 2009 class (if rumors about Jennert are true).
Chris Young is done this year and never lived up to his 4star status.
Horne, Gary and West were solid contributors this year.

So that is 4, yes 4 WRs from classes prior to 2011. Lenz and Horne will both be Seniors, Gary a RS Jr, and Jarvis a RS So. Those guys and the freshmen who redshirted this year are all we have with "experience" at WR. For a team that routinely puts 4 WRs on the field, that is thin. Also, only Lenz is the tallest of the experienced WRs at 6'.

The staff is playing a numbers game. They have to make up for some pretty lean classes at WR so they are taking as many as they can. Then, if one or two don't pan out, they wont be up a creek.

Bundrage and JQ Daniels were rumored to be vying for PT at the beggining of the season, likely because they were physically the most ready to play. There is no guarantee that all 4 of the 2011 freshmen will pan out so they have to think about the future with the 2012 commits.

It also looks like this WR class has a focus more on size with Quan West at 6'4, Daley at 6'3, Patrick Harris at 6'1, and possibly Chance Allen at 6'3. We could then have a good mix of speedy slot guys at 5'9 and below and some guys with more size at 6' plus.

One good thing about Daley is that if he doesn't crack the WR ranks, he can be moved to defense.

When looking at the WR in this class you have to consider the last 4 classes as well. Next season up to 9 (with Allen pending) of our WRs will be RSFr and Fr. We need lots of competition between those guys so that the cream will rise to the top.

EDIT: I just noticed that Chris Young was a Jr this year (forgot about the redshirt) so he will be back next year but probably wont contribute much more than this year (6 for 68 and 1TD).

ISU does NOT routinely put 4 WRs on the field. In fact, they hardly ever do. Every time there are 4 pass catchers on the field, one of them is a TE split out wide. My thought is that if Bundrage and Daniels are really as good as the staff is talking, I don't see a reason to bring in 4. They will have three pretty good upperclassmen in Lenz, Horne and Gary plus West has seen time. Then there's Bundrage and Daniels (who may end up at TE). My opinion is that the only way you bring in 4 is if Daniels is going to TE, Lampkin to T&F, Ecby is a bust and Jennert is transferring out. Otherwise use the scholarship for a defensive player and bring in more WRs next year to keep the pipeline full.

OK, even if we usually only play 3 WRs, we still need more than 5 or 6 WRs ready to play. There are no guarantees on anyone so I still think it isn't a bad idea to look to the future if there are good WRs available.
Your argument is that we should be fine this year with the following:
Lenz
Horne
C. Young
Gary
J West
Bundrage
JQ Daniels
(Note, I listed these guys by class. Young will probably be toward the bottom of this list as far as PT goes based on PT this year.)

That would be fine for this year. It gives us a similar 7 man rotation to this year. However, the staff has to think multiple years in the future. Lenz, Horne, and Young are all gone after this year. That leaves Gary and West as the upperclassmen with Bundrage and JQD as having limited experience as RS Sophmores. We then have to fille 3 spots with Ecby, Lampkin and whatever recruits are signed this year. At this point we don't know how any of the youngsters are going to pan out. Bundrage sounds like he has the best shot so far. JQ sounds good, but it's still up in the air as to where he'll end up.
We have no clue how Ecby, Lampkin, Q West, P harris, or Dondre Daley will work out. You also have to factor in injuries and other attrition. I don't completely trust Gary to completely stay out of trouble and he is likely on a very short leash.
In college football, you basically have to assume that a few guys every year are going to be busts or leave the program. It happens at all levels, even with 4 star recruits. ISU has had relatively bad luck at WR over the last 4 years so the staff has to make up for it by stocking up on talent when they can.

If there aren't any defensive players that the staff wants more than Chance Allen, then I think it's a great idea to take him. It increases the odds that we get more than one WR that can contribute out of this class. Bringing in another WR this year instead of next give that recruit the chance to redshirt, physically and mentally mature, get a good grasp of the offense, and increase the amount of competition in the WR corps.

If you can take Chance Allen at this point in the game, you take him. We don't have another hugely pressing need. If we did and there was a viable option there, that would change but in our position, at this point in the game, you are taking the best guys you can.

The only takeaway from that is that ESPN football recruiting sucks. I wouldn't trust two-thirds of their info when it comes to football recruiting.

It really depends on the people running their individual sites. Some have a lot more info than Rivals.

hence, the "two-thirds" in my statement. When it comes to ISU, they often don't have a clue.
