None of this years recruits are signed yet so they can still choose to go elsewhere. As for everyone already enrolled at Houston, they knew Herman was probably gone this year or next year when they committed and signed.

Also, the kids coming back for Houston will likely still have a great team, particularly for their conference.

Houston has only made one so-so hire in the past fifteen years.

They went from Briles, to Sumlin, then a 21 - 17 "down period" with Tony Levine, and then Herman.

Three of those coaches ended up with pretty good jobs.

Houston will hire another very good up and coming coach. They'll probably win their conference next year and the countdown to when their new coach leaves will start.

I'll bet there's more than one signed player who thought Herman would be there his entire career (not saying that is wise, but not all players expect the Coach to up and leave). I'd also be willing to bet that when asked during the recruiting process that Coaches are less than transparent about their career aspirations as they sit and talk to kids and parents. This isn't to knock TH, it's just the reality of the business. It would just be nice if the players had some of the same options as their multi-millionaire Coaches. What if Coaches had to sit out a year when they changed schools?

I don't know how realistic it is for ISU to win a Big 12 championship, but I love that it's his goal to bring a football championship here. If he keeps recruiting and squeezing every ounce of talent out of his team like he's been doing so far, perhaps it becomes more realistic.

This always comes at a price, though: it's great to have while it's around, but what that likely means is that someday, Campbell is going to be poached to bigger and brighter horizons. The faster he brings up ISU, the more likely it becomes that he is taken away. Really sucks to view it that way, but that's more or less the reality... Unless ISU quickly becomes a perennial CFP title contender.

Maybe I'm being delusional or overly optimistic, but for whatever reason I think he only leaves for OSU. Maybe he's just saying what we all want to hear, but he really seems to like it in Ames and really seems to want to build a winner here. Perhaps we need to get Earle Bruce to talk to Campbell and "mentor" him that the grass isn't always greener somewhere else, especially at OSU.

I like Campbell a lot, but a lot of us felt this way about Rhoads (or Chiz or . . . ) at this time in their tenure.

Though I would be okay with finally having a coach leave for good reasons, not bad. The Chizz doesnt' count for that either

I think we will start to have some success in the next few year.

However, the big test will be what CMC does when he gets his assistants poached.

Rhoads had a really good staff to start out and made a couple of solid hires, but he really struggled when he didn't replace Herman.

Manning is going to keep getting positive attention as he turns around this offense. He can easily turn that into a top tier OC position or a HC position all his own, just like Candle did with Toledo.

CMC will really earn his paycheck the year he has to replace Manning. That will tell us if we continue positive momentum or take a step back.

Of course other assistants will get opportunities as well if we can keep improving the next few years.

I'm not as worried about this because I feel like Campbell will hire someone he feels will be a good fit, and work well within the structure of the program (my reference for this was him bringing in his existing staff, rather than going out and making "splash" hires). I feel like Rhoads just wanted to hire the best person he could find, regardless of fit.
