Schmidt has always been terrible. This is an indictment on TJ now if he doesn't do anything about it. Ultimately he's the one in charge and letting this s*** continue

Hopefully he just isn’t too much of a drinking buddy where he won’t have an issue making a change.

Maybe I'm out over my skis but Tom Manning was winning games at Iowa State and a great friend of CMC. The offense has been vastly improved since he left under now multiple coaches.

Do with that what you will.

The first four minutes of the second half was as mad as I’ve been watching Iowa state basketball in a long time. Throwing it to Jefferson and watching him take 9 dribbles backing his guy down isn’t offense. The fact we had a full halftime and that’s what we came up with was depressing

Exactly. They are trying to use him like a Niang, and offensively, he’s not even close. That’s on the coaches. Put your players in a position to succeed. Jefferson isn’t to off the hook either though, the ball cannot get stuck with him AND he needs to figure out his handles. He is so loose with his dribble, anytime he backs down I pretty much expect a TO.

It’s just such a hard thing to cut off of. Theres a reason you don’t see many teams playing out of the post any more. That beginning of the second half stretch guys were trying to cut and he was trying to find them but it’s just too congested. You can’t initiate offense 8 feet from the hoop

There is no way anyone can justify keeping whoever is responsible for end of half/game sets on staff. They have been a complete failure all year.
Arizona is better from 70ft out than we are running a set play in our offensive end.

Too soon?

It’s fair to critique certain tactics, but we’re 24th in KenPom on offense. That’s close to the Hoiberg/Prohm years in which we had a lot more offensive talent

Previous KenPom ORtg rankings:

24th in 2012, 8th in 2013, 9th in 2014, 12th in 2015, 7th in 2016, 11th in 2017, and 9th in 2019

Offense costs the most in the portal. It’s not something we’ll easily be elite in.

Defense is our foundation, and it has let us down at times this season…although still very good on the year

I’m hoping the Toure and Pleta help make us more athletic on defense Day 1.

And that we see more small ball, which would both help create mismatches on offense, and improve our foot speed on defense

How much of that is because we ran up the stats in the noncon though?

If you look at just conference games on torvik, our ADJO in conference play season is 52. In conference play in some of those hoiberg years we were rating out top 10. We're nowhere near those years.

And we are no where near as talented on offense, either.

In Barttorvik, our AdjEff Offense is 30th overall and 36th vs Top 100. Our defense slides more.

Imo given we’re talking about ADJO, some of the degradation is not getting the points and possessions off turnovers, which is consistent with the bigger decrease on defense

I think our defense and offense were very good despite lacking length, athleticism, and not having true top shelf talent- because we were elite in energy and effort.

So it’s not surprising we fall off as we wear down and kind of pick our spots

What is it since January 1?

On Torvik, ISU is 30th for the season overall.
Before Jan 1, they were 4th.
But since Jan 1, they are 59th.

For reference the defense-
Before Jan 1, 42nd.
After Jan 1, 5th.

I guess you just have to hope it all comes together at the same time... like, now.

It's just so frustrating that we look so unorganized on offense. We don't have an identity. Like Hoiberg years we knew what the goal was. Spread the floor and open the lane for driver's based off shooting three pointers. WIth this team I dont even know what the goal is and what we are supposed to be doing. Don't get me started on the last 20 seconds of each half during games. We can't run a play that works to save our life. It usually ends up one player having to make a super tough shot because we ran out of time. It's complete nonsense. This isn't football either where the head coach is the real reason we are doing what we are doing. TJ relys on Schmitt to run a solid play and he just can't.
